pretty simple really. You have a sensor caller a coolant temp. sensor, it basically tells the computer what the temp of the coolant is so the computer can make air/fuel ratio decisions. You have a O2 sensor, That tells the computer how much hydrocarbons(raw fuel) is unburned from the exhaust. In my opinion those are the basic 2 major ways for the computer to make the car run. Different makes and models have more sensors that tell different things that make the car run even more efficient. such as a IAT sensor simply stands for intake air temp, Most people know that all air is not created equal. The summer air is much more dense and winter aire is much less dense, that is also true with elevations. The big thing today is the EGR valve (exhaust gas recirculation) This is a purly emissions based part. I hope that at least gave you an idea of how an engine managment system works

it tells the computer that it needs more gas to air ratio so u get more bang for ur buck..
