well, there are some registries showing that on an Egypt temple on Medinet-Abou, around 1190 b.c. showing a competence with foiled swords and masks.
On century XVI, gunpowder is discovered, and plate armors become obsolete, then, using the point of the sword becomes more popular, and Spain, Italy and France become the stronger fencing countries.

the Japanese started Fencing around 1400 A.D. five thousand years ago
