geo-economic importance well about 75% of all seized opiates were Cultivated in Afghanistan. As far as geo-strategic since roughly 1885 or so the battling btw British India and Tsarist Russia Afghanistan's borders became defined to geopolitically produce a road block btw the 2 powers now it has to do with the geopolitics of oil as well as the so called "fight on terror".
however; all theses things go hand and hand and change with time.

The geo-strategic importance of Afghanistan is very limited.  Being a mostly landlocked mountainous territory, there is little of any strategic to anyone.  There are no special minerals or other natural resources there.  The culture is of no special notice either.  It's only noteworthy feature might be it's proximity to the former USSR.  One other point of strategic importance of Afghanistan would be that the mountains that are everywhere in the country limit the number of  navigable paths from east to west, and vice versa, and so anyone passing east or west would have to travel one of a fairly limited number of routes.
