The assumption is wrong, since the ip numbers above 220.x.x.x are for special use and the ip#'s are grouped, for example an ip number in format 64.x.x.x means that the owner of that ip can use up to 254*254*254 ip'sor something close to it, which is above 16 million, and I don't know any company that owns 16 million PC's or devices, although they have the class A ip#'s. and there are reserved ip#'s for class A, B and C networks which anyone can use in local network, but cannot go out to internet, which makes  the assumption wrong too.
I'm also looking for the number of devices that are connecting to the internet for a research, if anyone knows please give an accurate answer.

Actually, this number can never be known because of technology that does NAT/DAT.  This is network address translation that allows multiple computers to access the network using the same ip address.

How many computers are connected to the Internet?

Ask Net MomA reader asks, "How many computers are connected to the Internet?"

But I needed more information. So I sent another message-- Hi-I'd like to try and answer this question but I need you to give me a little more information about what you want--by "connected to the Internet" do you mean host computers, running services such as web servers? What do you mean by connected--permanently "on"? Or do you mean "able" to call in and connect? Plus, what's meant by "computers"-- are you counting Internet-aware phones and PDAs? What about WebTV? With the convergence of technologies, this once easy question becomes many-faceted. Let me know if it's just hosts/servers you want. best, JP

And then I heard back:
message = "I mean just want host/servers."

That one is easier. The number of hosts "advertised" by DNS in Jan 2004 was 233,101,481 But even that's not an accurate number to answer the question due to internal network natting (Network address translation). More sources here.

"I don't mean Internet-aware phones and PDAs .But you can give me the figures for Internet-aware phones and PDAs too. Thanks."

I looked this up recently and was unable to find a good number. There are some numbers available if you go by each service provider for dial-up, but if someone has a wireless connection, all the bets are off.
There's a wireless prediction but basically, the answer is, "a lot."

one day we will run out of space for IP addresses what will happen when this happens? will we just leave the internet with 4,294,967,296 people on it or will we invent another way for people to connect to the internet? please help if anybody works for something like the secret service and would possibly know the answer to this?

That's not really true either.  Don't forget that in a home network you can have x amount of computers on 1 IP address.  For a more better answer, look at infoplease.com and look for How Many Online Worldwide.

I just saw that the number or host/servers as of 2004 was just over 233 million, so spidermnky2003 number, if including user/private machines, seems to be more accurate.

Right now (Summer of '06) there are about 400,000,000 different HOSTs connected to the internet (public IP adresses). 4,228,250,625 is the number of different IP's So there's plenty of room. My guess is that we'll reach billion in about 2-3 years.

None of the above answers are complete because they forget about NAT (Network Address Translation). The answer by "google" on 5/2/2004 is partially correct. There are address that are "Reserved", and addresses are divided into "Subnets" (Sub Networks). Every subnet uses 2 address by itself (A Network address, and a Broadcast Address).
However, there is more computers than either answer gives because a NAT server (Found in almost all routers now-a-days) can have hundreds of computers using only one internet address.
A good Always-Up-To-Date count of the computers on the Internet can be found here:
http://www.isc.org/index.pl?/ops/ds/
The as of 07/2006 the number is 439,286,364 hosts.
Do read the FAQ's on how accurate this answer is.
