I adopted a 2 1/2 year old JRT- Howie, without having read about them first! And now I love Howie and want to be fair to him. We live on a farm and he gets lots of exercise, chasing squirrels, deer, raccoons, long walks, chasing balls, etc.  But I just purchased chickens and geese (all babies right now)and have guineas already.  What is the best way to train Howie he cannot chase and kill these birds.  Unfortunately, he did kill 1 of the guineas when it was little.  They are 3 months old now. I do have cats and he is fine with them.  Any suggestions will be appreciated.  Thank you.

Each breed of dog was bred for certain characteristics, both physically and behaviorally.  JRTs are bred to chase after, and yes, even kill their "prey."  They can be great dogs for people in different situations, but perhaps you may consider finding a more appropriate home for Howie, and adopting a breed that would be better for your lifestyle.  The AKC has tons of info on each breeds personality traits, and even links to rescue groups so you can save a dogs life instead of purchasing a puppy.

I have a JRT and he just loves anything he sees. I have found that as long as what ever he is playing with does not run from him, he will play gently. The only solution i can find it to keep him and your other animals separate. Why couldnt you just keep your chicken and geese in an enclosed area since they dont need much excercise and let you puppy run free? Judging from what you say, this home sounds like a great home for a JRT and i would hate to hear that he lost out on it so a few chickens could have the run of the place.

Well, you used the work 'adopted'...... and that means for better or ......

We have a wire haired fox terrier and I truly understand your situation, but when you make a dog part of your family.... like a child.... you don't give him away .... you do what you have to do in order to make life safe for him and the rest of his environment.  Good luck.
