your dog has bad breath because you are feeding it wet instead of dry dog food.  Dry is better because it cleans the teeth like one of those Jumbones you see on TV.

Teething puppies tend to have very foul breath. Their baby teeth are essentially just dying tissue, so they're not going to smell too pleasant when they're falling out.

I have 3 plus ? mini doxies (my 4 yr old is bout ready to have a litter)  My male has bad breath also.  He eats the same as the 2 females, but they don't have bad breath.  He also doesn't have worms just spent $$$ at vet to have a full work up on him, worm test, blood test etc.  Still don't know why he has bad breath, do you?

I have 2. One is 8 and the other is 5.  They have had terrible breath since the day we got them.  We get their teeth cleaned regularly and we brush them at home.  It is just something with the breed.  They all tend to have bad breath, some are just worse than others.  There's not much you can do about it.  Mints do help temporarily.

Stinky-breathed lil minature dachshund named Axle. He is about 5 months old. We feed him wet food because he refuses to eat dry and when we force it on him for a day or two he gets emaciated. He is also teething and has lost two teeth. He is basically a spoiled runt but we love him. Just that dragon's breath could make the Pope cuss.....

While many things can cause bad breath the usual culprit is plague build up. Oral hygiene is as important in pets as it is in us humans. Proper teeth brushing (daily) will most likely clear up any foul odors, if it persists it is best to check with your vet. Untreated oral problems can lead to death-yes death in our canine friends. So get them to the vet for regular cleanings and health checks! An ounce of prevention is worth more then a pound of cure.  Also some breeds tend to have smellier breath then others, doxies are one of the usual "offenders" as are bassets and several other breeds. Wishing you minty freshness!

Dose any one have any suggestion on Yorkies with bad breath. I read about Doxies and think that it might fit my problem also. Gus is 8 months old and I am trying everything.... The vet suggested yogurt. I haven't tried it yet.

I had a full size Dachshund which never had this problem and now have a mini Dachshund that smells like he eats poop all day, But I keep my yard clean, He eats science diet dry food, has recently had his  teeth cleaned at the vet and was just checked for worms. Last year I had his teeth cleaned and at that time he had 2 teeth pulled. The problem went away for almost a full year so when it returned I took him back to the vet for another teeth cleaning. But this time he had no bad teeth and the vet said that over all his mouth was still in good condition. I guess we're all just stuck with a mouth that only a parent can love. I have tried charcoal based treat products in case it was coming from his stomach, But guess what.... still nothing. If anyone has any further suggestions, Please email me at vinnyandbilly@yahoo.com. And don't say my dog isn't cared for properly, I treat my dogs better than most people treat their own children.

I have 1 mini I've noticed her breath would stink really bad sometimes and didn't know why, then one day I figured it out.
I caught here out in the backyard eating dog poo.I couldn't get her to stop,so I bought some Tabasco and would sprinkle it over the poo in the yard.
Let's just say after a couple of days,NO MORE BAD BREATH!!

I just recently bought a mini doxie as well, on the 30th of this month she will be 5 months old. I recently, within the week noticed how nasty her breath was. I am glad to know I am not the only one who has this problem with my doxie. I didn't know it was a breed trait. Yuck! No more kisses from her! LOL!

My 6 month old dachshund also has terrible breath, the vet told me it was due to teething. He also has fits where he drools alot and chatters his jaw and teeth, which the vet also blamed on teething, but I was wondering on anyone else has witnessed that behavior in their dachshund.

I have a 4 month old beagle boy and his breath is just awful.  When I open his mouth, the smell is coming from his gums & teeth...like rotting flesh or even a hint of blood smell.  I do believe it's the teething process.  He eats very good food and chews on lots of bones and rawhides.  That probably even makes it worse since his baby teeth are getting a good work out.  Just a thought.

I have a Doxie who will be 6 this March and he has just recently developed foul breath odor which he hasn't always had.  His gums are purple-ish in color, could this have something to do with it?

I have 2 male puppies turning 9 months on the 17th.  They both have horrible breath.  My 16 year old who we just had put down was the king of bad breath.  We brushed his teeth when he was younger to help it.  It never worked.  Every one called him Halitosis breath.  We dreaded taking him on road trips.

Dachshund are prone to bad breath, it is the breed. Try using a Professional Dental Solutions. I works wonders in any type of breed. All you do is put a small amount in the dogs water dish, and over time it freshens breath, and prevents plaque build- up.

I have a 10 year old doxie.  His breath is attrosious!!  It drives me crazy, but I am tending to agree that there is no cure.  He eats dry food, gets his teeth cleaned yearly, and is in good health.

My cat had bad breath due mostly  to gum problems. The vet advised to brush teeth. So we did but was time consuming and did not help much either.
Now I use Breathalyser which you can buy at the veterinarian in a blue bottle. Almost $20 dollars for 16.9 oz. It takes about three weeks for the Breathalyser to work.
All you have to do, add some in the drinking water  of your pet or with his food.  I Mostly give dry food three times a day and cover up all the dry food with water which also contains  the Breathalyser. Your pet then has to drink the water with the medicine to get to the real  yumy food. This way you are sure your pet gets it all the time.  Now I give it three times a day for the rest of my pets life and all his tooth problems and gum problems disapeared.
Easy as that. Hope that will work for you.

I never thought of this, but when I told my Father that my mini-dachsund had the worst breath ever, he said think about it this way; her stomach is only a few inches from her mouth. Of course she is going to have bad breath, all small dogs do. Makes sense when you think about it, doesn't it?

I have 4 Doxies. 2 had the same problem.  Although some of it can be due to tarter and a good brushing does not hurt 3 times a week.  We discovered that the 2 Doxies with the bad breath had a tooth problem common with doxies. What happens is the doxies will bite/nibble their skin/fur/toes.tail etc. and the fur, dirt, bacteria gets pushed DOWN under the gum line of the big point canine teeth.
This happens until there is a large pocket of stuff there, then an infection sets in hence the smell.
One of my doxies had to have both canine teeth removed because the pus formed a huge pocket where everything just kept collecting. (they really do not use them and they are domestic and do not hunt for live food).

Now what we do  on the dogs is we purchased a metal dentist tooth probe to get under the gum line.  Once a week we use oragel on the dogs gums and swipe the probe under the gums on those 2 teeth to pull out any bad stuff hair etc.. then we brush their teeth and use a waterpick.

We also get their teeth professionally cleaned at the vets about every 2 years (supposed to be 1X year) it can be expensive but the bacteria that gets under the gum line can go into the bloodstream and seriously hurt the dog.

Now the dogs have sweet smelling breath, and they are called by name instead of instead of being called "tuna tongue" or "dead rat breath"
