What are the points of using Firewall with Anti-virus software? And how they are intersect to each others?

Firewalls and anti-virus work on two seperate parts of the problem. A firewall shields your computer from unwanted connections by outsiders. However, virii can still get through - users may download virus attachments in email, may accidentaly download a virus infection from FTP or a website, etc. Two shields are better than one.
