Chihuhuas are by nature very clean, they groom themselves constantly, and often lick their front paws and then rub them over their face to clean it, just as a cat does.  If you have more than one, the less dominant dog will spend time cleaning the ears of the top-dog and also lick its face.

Chihuahuas should be bathed no more then once every month or two.  They really have no odor, unless they roll in something stinky.  Long-hairs can be bathed a bit more often, and of course you need to keep up on brushing daily and cutting off any poopy that gets stuck to their furry backsides.

They do need to have their toenails clipped every two weeks, and their teeth brushed at least once a week.  Get a baby toothbrush and toothpaste (non-foaming and ok if swallowed).  If you start young, you will have not problems doing this.  Praise the dog for not squirming during, and give them a treat afterward, so they connect tooth-brushing with treats.

Too frequent bathing will cause dry skin, itching, flaking, scratching, etc.  If the dog has an unpleasant odor and has not been rolling in something smelly, take it to the vet.  Certain conditions can cause odor, and chihuahuas should have their ears inspected frequently for ear mites.
