If your cockatoo is left loose in your home or flies around the room as is most common for parrots, you may have a problem with a Cairn.  They are great hunters and I know out of doors, no squirrel, gray or red, mouse, or sparrow on the ground was ever fast enough to escape our Cairn. Chipmunks with a head start had a prayer.  We did have a Canary in the house who escaped, with none of us around, from its cage.  The Cairn brought the bird to us when my wife and daughter were calling for the bird (we won't go there).  While there wasn't a mark on the late Canary (it could have died of fright), there was no question it hadn't gotten away from the Cairn.  Our Cairn could always coexist with a caged-bird but you would never let it out in the same room - instincts being what they are. I really wouldn't recommend it for a cockatoo which usually is let out a lot for socialization, etc. But I still keep both caged-Canaries and Cairns!
