The Germans ate very well during most of the war. For about sixteen years before they were starving because of a treaty that was the result of world war 1. After that war they were forced to decrease their military to about 30,000. A lot of Germans were from  military families. Hitler came to power with promises of making their lives better. At first he did. That is why he was able to make them do whatever he wanted them to.
