Can you change from a j1 visa to any other visa once you have overstayed your status for less than 180 days? What can you do to stay legally?

I  want  to  change  my  j1  visa  into  any  other,  how  it is  possible  ...i am  legal   now  in  the  States.

I have the J1-visa, work&travel program. me and my friend would like to extend our visa for like one year. Should we become students in USA? How much the extension could cost? thanks

i have the same problem. can i change my j1 visa into a tourist visa so i wont have to  the country right away if i leave the program early?
