OK Since I don't know how to answer all these questions I'll just answer the basics. If a female goes into heat her teats will enlarge and her vulva will enlarge too. People often mistake this for pregnancy. A Dog has to be in heat to be pregnant. If they breed assume that they are pregnant. They are pregnant for 58-66 days(9 weeks). The earliest you can tell they are pregnant is 3-4 weeks when you can go to the vet and get a dog pregnancy test that costs $20-$30 dollars.(repro check) Small breed dogs will start getting big around 5 weeks along. Bigger dogs may wait to show much until the last 2 weeks. Other signs of pregnancy are more interest in food and water, and possible increase in urinating due to enlarged uterus that squishes the bladder. They may begin to get lazier and lay around more. You need to be able to tell when they're ready for labor and know what to expect so during laor so you can be there and call the vet if something goes wrong. This is important because sometimes the complications can cost you the lives of the dogs. Other signs she is almost in labor are no interest in the most tempting food, restlessness, and "nest making." I'd just like to say that if your dog is pregnant, about the 58th day you need to pay close attention to her! Make sure once she has the puppies that they get her milk within 24 hours of birth, since she has special milk that strengthens their ammune system!!! If she is pregnant than within a few days of the birth she will have fluid coming out of her nipples. Check to see if she is NESTING by diging and making a comfortable place. If you find that she is pregnant give her a box within the first few day of birth so she can NEST in it, BUT DO NOT MAKE IT TO HIGH! It should be about 8 inches high or if you give them rags make sure to wash them frequently!!! There are a few stages in birth and you need to know WHEN and HOW to help your pet, so search online for different sites so you are well informed!!! Type in preparing for puppies or something simular to that, they have many tips!

She could be pregnant if she is getting fatter around 6 weeks. My dog bled some about that far along too but then it turned out to be a false pregnancy. I don't know what the diarreah means but it could be that she is not getting enough nutrition. Make sure she is getting fed 25% more each week of pregnancy from now on and that it is puppy food. She should be fed puppy food throughout pregnancy and nursing. It would be very helpful to you to go to the vet and get a dog pregnancy test because if she is not pregnant you don't want to overfeed her. She should get steadily fatter and if she is having pups expect them within 3 weeks. Read up all you can on whelping, know what to expect during that time, and know how to respond in case of an emergency. Failure to do so often results in the death of the mom and pups. To chanel ladner(and Malanie at the end) You can't be sure when your dog mated but if she was in heat she probably did. The last time you thought she was pregnant and she wasn't was a false pregnancy. If you want to find out if she is really pregnant this time you can get a dog pregnancy test at the vet from $20-$30. You need to know how far along your dog is in her pregnancy so you can know when she is ready to have pups and be with her as she has them. Often if you are not there or don't know what to expect even if you are, the dog and the pups die due to complications! Whelping is a natural thing and the dog usually can do it alone but problems often arise and you need to be there if they have them to help. However in your case this could be a very dangerous situation for you and your dog maricela! First of all chihuahuas almost always have birth complications due to their size and more often than not a pup or the mom will die! Not only that but 10 months is waaaay too young too have pups for any breed. Their bodies aren't mature enough. I'm sorry if I'm scaring you but I want you to know how dangerous this is. You need to 1. Know how far along your dog is 2. know how to tell she is ready to have pups so you can be with her as she has them 3. Know what to expect in labor so if something abnormal comes along you can call the vets emergency number or if time doesn't permit that, help the pups yourself! For the sake of your dog please be prepared and learn all you can. Next time if you don't spray her please learn all you can on breeding, pregnancy care, signs of pregnancy, labor, etc. Your dogs life could depend on it! If he keeps breeding her then yes she, more likely then not, will get pregnant. You have no idea what you are heading into though! First there is pregnancy with all the care and attention it needs then there is whelping in which complications sometimes arise that can cost lots of money or worse the dog and pup's life! Then the pups with their shots, messes, food, selling, etc. It is a BIG responsibility! Hi.These are the simple things to look for to see if your dog is pregnant or not. 1.your dog is loosing her appetite. 2.her stomache is getting bigger. 3.the dog wobbles while walking or running. 4.your dog sleeps alot. 5.your dog also lays down alot. 6.the dog will look for warm places to stay alot. 7.also,your dog will change her attitude 8.your dog's nipples will be bigger,and will have milk in them. 9.you can feel the babies move in the stomache about a week or 2 before giving birth.So that will give you a hint.(that hint is you will know that it is due very soon). 10.your dog will be due 3 months 10 days or less. 11.last,your dog will need to eat some other different kind of food to be real healthy.(but you don't really need to). and that's how you check if your dog is pregnant or not.have a good day.

This is for Bella, and just about everyone else posting questions on this site. Please,Please, educate yourselves, and get your dogs fixed! Unless you own a dog that is worth breeding and understand all that is involved in the breeding process as well as the what it takes to raise puppies, I beg you to get your dogs fixed. As far as Bella goes, the chances that she is pregnant are fairly high. When in heat females are usually bred at the 11th - 14th day. After which their chances of becoming pregnant begin to decline. Since the period of gestation (ave. of 63 days for a dog of her size) is short, you will begin to signs that she is pregnant around 2-3 weeks. Her nipples will be the first indication, along with mood swings and appetite changes. You might want to discuss all of this with your vet and also have your vet make recommendations for her diet during pregnancy as well. If this is her first heat, I would then assume your dog is pretty young. This can also come with issues. Being a young Mother very similar to that of humans. I would also discuss this with your vet if this is the case. If your dog does have pups, please seek as much help as possible, make sure they are clean and safe. After 8 weeks, send the puppies on to their new homes and get your dog fixed. She will thank you for it.

I believe my dog is pregnant as she has been in heat for about a week now. She got out of the house the other day (we are still trying to break her of running as she was a stray before we got her). She was gone for like 7 hours and then came back home. She has never done that before. We usually have to go looking for her. She has never just come back home. Anyhow, my question is that if she did "fool around" while she was out and is pregnant, she is only like 3 or 4 days pregnant. Can you still use the topical flea agents like Advantage, etc. on the dog. All the packages say not to use on a pregnant dog. I do not know for sure that she is pregnant but I do not want to take a chance on hurting her. My vet is currently out-of-town and my local pet store thought that it would probably be okay for this month but not after this month until after she delivers. I would appreciate any advice on this. Thanks a bunch.

I think that everyone believes that when dogs breed they become "lock" or "stuck" together and the female yelps. And that is the only way the female dog can become pregnant. Well, speaking from experience my dog did not get stuck or locked to the male and she never yelp either. However just as as it is for a woman, female dogs can only get pregnant during a certain time of their season, 14 to 21 days after the first day. The average season for a female dog is 27 to 30 days and they should go into season every 6 to 7 months. Once pregnant it will take 63 days before she will deliver.However if you suspect that your pet is pregnant or she is showing the signs of being pregnant, i.e. wanting to sleep more, eating more, going potty more, increased color change and size in her teats and gaining weight. Then it would be most important to take her to the vet to find out for sure. There you can learn important ways to help better her care during her special time. I as the mommy to a small breed of dog, recommend that instead of waiting for your dog to go into labor and risk complication and the possibly losing not only the puppy's but your beloved pet as well. That you contact your vet and schedule a planed doggy C-section. That way you can help cut down the chance of losing any of them.I desire that the information I have provided has been helpful to someone. As I truly understand how upsetting and confusing this can all be when you don't know what to do or what's going on. Gook luck.....

I have a big-boned German Shepherd that is only a year and a half old. She is outside on a chain(plastic chain with a nice collar). I had been hearing all my outside dogs barking a lot recently (My big-boned German Shepherd, My full-blood German shepherd and my boxer pit mix.) Well, recently I found out the barking was from a neighbors dog coming over and mating her. I have no idea which time she became pregnant but now she is. Her teats are big and lactating. My problem is she loves to jump around when she gets excited. Will she hurt her pups by jumping? Also, is there any tips on how to tell when she is about to have them? hi... i have a question about my boxer puppy....She is about 13 months old and has gone into heat cant remember the exact day....we have kept her in the house everyday up until today and we thought she was done bleeding and let her outside...when we returned home she was stuck to a german shepard...we are not sure how long they were stuck but we broke them up with hot water.....im just curious if she may be pregnant...i know its a possibility but i dont know how long it takes when they get stuck together to get pregnant....???? Also wanted to know is it possible she could have gotten pregnant by this other dog that jumped on her on a few separate occasions....he got it in but didnt stick to her? please help if u can...Your help is very much appreciated.... I have a 2yr old staff terrior, we tried to mate her feb 27,now her teat are bigger,and her rib cage is bigger but i cant tell if i feel puppie, and i dont have a vet fee, she is a very friendly dog to everyone strangers and all, she is a inside house dog, if she is pregnant i guess she is about 50 something days, she has still been acting the usual laying around in my daughters bed, but the other day, we tied her up in the back yard which we have done probably about 15 times since we had her and she watch people come and go she comes to them wags her tail licks them, the neighbor came over whom she plays with through the fence sometimes,to do her garden on my side of the house and my dog bit her and she doesnt bite she is over friendly. does this sound like a pregnant dog?

How old are some of the people posting questions here? I hope not out of elementary school because I question your spelling and grammatical ability. I know this FAQ is for generally asking questions, but be mature about it. I thank the people posting here who actually know what their talking about, or have genuine inquiries. My family has a walker hound/beagle mix of about 5 years, and we're guessing she and our new 8 month old Siberian husky mated about a month ago. Her teats have gotten bigger, as well as her tummy, but I was wondering if it's safe for a small to medium sized dog to give birth to a possibly large litter of a larger breed dog, such as a Siberian husky. Would someone of actual knowledge of facts, rather than just estimations or guesses please reply, Thank you.

Sixteen days ago my mom found a dog on the side of the road who had been hit by a car. We have only had her in our care for the past 2 weeks. Now I'm not sure but I would think she would have miscarried her litter because of the accident if she in fact were pregnant, but over the days I have noticed some signs that other people have posted. She pees a lot, and she can get moody. She also seems lazy and her genital area and nipples look pronounced. A lot of these symptoms I know could be just effects of the trauma of the accident, and the assumed cracked pelvis observed by 3 vets. It would mean a lot if you could tell me your thoughts. The last thing that I want is for her to be pregnant AND have a pelvic injury.

I have a female shihtzu she was bred with another shih tzu the End of November. I am not sure if she is pregnant or not because she has shown fewer signs then more. She is just about off her food, and her temperment has changed dangerously(she nipped yesterday for the first time and 6 months) we bred her 3rd heat as directed from the vet. Her teats have enlarged but not much... I would very much like to know if she is pregnant or not so if someone could advise me to do something because I am very worried about her. A vet came to see her but he said it would take another 2 weeks and now she has just went off her food only eating meat. Please someone reply I need help Thanks Kat

Hi i have a 9 - 10 month old lab- mix, she got loose for an hour on 1/30/06 and she has a boyfriend down the road and she was there just before coming home, while in heat, but when she came home she was growling. her teats are red/ blueish purple. She has also become more loving to me and my father. She is being more protective of her stomach. She tries to nip at my hands when i try to pet her, and her stomach as grown slightly and has become more firm. This is the first female we have not spayed because she hadn't had all of her shots. Her "area" has become more swollen and pinkish. i am only 12 and i would like to know if she is pregnant. she tries to go out and urinate more often PLEASE HELP ME FIND OUT IF SHE IS PREGNANT BECAUSE WE CANT AFFORD AN ULTRASOUND. Hi I was wondering, I have a Chihuahua, She matted with another male chi. He got her 4 times, With some help, because he was smaller then her, but they never got stuck, It has been 2 weeks, She was still swollen a week after, Her nipples are still kinda enlarged, Just as they were when she was 1st in heat, Altho the lower nipples are back to small normal size, just the nipple by her ribs are still inlarged, She has been alot closer to me, then before, always following me and wanting to lay by me, Become more lazier, and eating alot more then what she use to. She hasn't gotten sick or anything. She looks like she has gained alittle more weight, Before she was really skinny because she was picky about her food, but now she looks really good weight size, and always eating. ok i have a question, every dog i've ever owned has been spayed/neutered. but i got a chiuauah pup last year, i take her to the vet regularly and she's as healthy as can be. but when i called the vet to ask them about her being in heat they were rather vague? how long does this last, she acts so strangely. i planned on having her fixed this spring (as per the vet's advisement because of her very very tiny size) its been about three weeks and she's still swollen and acting very oddly. also there is a male dog that the neighbors do not tie or keep fenced whom wanders into our yard occasionally...so i'm unsure as to anything as far as pregnancy goes...any comments, or suggestions? neuroticpixie@netscape.com

Hi there... We found my dog when she was just a puppy. She looks alot like a labrador. We found out she was in heat about 1 1/2 or 2 months ago. Since then we have kept her inside the gate all the time. Before that.. she used to escape all the time. We have seen her "mate" a few times, but I'm not sure if she's pregnant or not. She isn't very fat.. but maybe a little. Ohh... where is her stomach supposed to grow.. like on what part??? And, her boobs are "hanging" down and are getting bigger. Could that be a sign that she is pregnant?? She has had more apetite, but she is still very active. Please let me know anything about this that you would know. It's very important!! Just let me know what you think.. either from experiances you have had with your dogs or just knowledge. Thanks!

I have a male pitbull, 10 years old, and recently my lil sister has come to live with us for the summer and she has a 2 year old female pitbull about 2 years old. I catch them mating all the time and I'm wondering how I can tell if she's pregnant. When they moved in, my sister had just taken her to the vet and he said she was in false pregnancy, her nipples were swollen and her other female parts were enlargened, so I dont know how to tell if shes pregnant by these signs. They have been with us for about a month so with all the mating they do (she mounts him a lot lately too) I think that she would be pregnant by now. Now, we are city people so the first thing I did was go and buy a home pregnancy test from a drug store and after chasing her around with a cup, I tested it and it came up negative. Well our dog, maggie is acting like never before. She gives off this anoying yelp and we have been looking for help. When we came to this web-site we saw all the symptoms that she has. She also paces alot. Pants alot, won't eat anything except our other dogs food which is different. She just started eating this about 40 minutes ago. But she wouldn't eat at all earlier. When we woke up this morning she had gotten in the house and had been digging and pacing and looking for a place to have puppies if that is what it is. We were felling all around to check her and we heard and felt 2 heartbeats, could this be a sign? Is she pregnant? Is there a way to tell how long she has been pregnant. She has also been like barking and biting our other dog. She also bit me and she has been taught to not do that. She doesn't want Missy our other dog around her. Help us PLEASE!!!

To the message way on top about -how long is a dog pregnant for?- Um yeah, DONNA was right. It is true that a dog is pregnant for 60-63 days give or take a few. It is also a fact that if you compare it to a humans pregnancy, a dog's pregnancy would be the equivalent to -1-month per human day, there for since month is 30 days, the average days in a month, give or take. Multiplied -1- day by -30- days a month, 30*1= 30 days, one month pregnant. Oh and what was that Donna said? Um I think it was "3 months"! I know a website I can direct you too, it's called "Hooked on Math" by the makers of "Hooked on Phonics". Now, doesn't feel very good to have someone be rude to you does it?

Hello i have a 6 month old Scottish Terrier female. Im NOT sure if she is pregnant or not. Ive taken her to the park a lot where you hardly see your dogs and they can run free. I dont know if she as been in heat or not. She is going to be 7 months soon. Im really worried ive also seen her with my friend 4 month old Poodle i know that he is not the dad he is too young and all males even when fixed like to do the hump. But anyways i know she has been more picky with her food and she has been eating more. She is still wild like all Terriers but sometimes she is down. Ok... I have 2 miniture Dauchsunds.. One a dapple, and two a black and red Dauchund... Her stomach has enlarged, and so has her vulva. As a Dauchshund they normally burrow and make nest ect. but she has been hiding under my bed more, eating her food more, stinking, farting(which is not normal for her, hiding under covers, ect. My dogs are both around the same age just a few months difference. I know most of the basics that a dog is pregnate for around 60-63 days, they have to lock, be in heat and so on. I'm not really in the position of going to the vet this month unless I know for sure that there's puppies. My Yorkie Leila went into heat for her first time during the last week of February and I know that she and my other Yorkie Bob did mate because I seen them get stuck together at least twice. Leila has definately been a lot more needy and loveable and her little boobies are getting swollen. I called the Vet because I want to take her in and get her checked (which is very costly), they recommended that I wait another week or two so they can just check to see if she is pregnant without having to do it by x-ray. I think the best thing to do if you think your dog may be pregnant is to take them to the Vet because if there are any complications it could be deadly to your doggy:( Also, if you want solid/accurate answers to your questions you should probably be consulting a Vet...........

if your dog has swollen nips, but is no heavier, or her attitude has change but that's it, she is probably not preggers. the signs that i have found most reliable are: crazy nips, noticeably broader around the abdomen, and being able to feel the ribs she may also have some discharge, but this has never applied to me. discharge is quite normal and does not mean that she has miscarried, okay. you know your dog better than anyone else, basically if you have a suspicion, check it out! it is better to be safe than sorry, and trust me you do not want to come down one morning and find a litter of pups on the living room floor! clean freaks out there beware it's a messy business.

bella that would be cool if she got layed by a fox,those puppys would be so cool looking let me know if is she is preg. and send pic if they look like little foxes lindsaycolovich@hotmail.com but yeah my dog is a puggle and we have been trying to get her mated with a pug, its only been like a week ago sence we last tryed breeding her, but she has really smelled bad also her boobies are not swollen yet but i figure thats because if she is preg, its only been a week so yeah that probably wont be happening for a month or so. I dont know though this is also my first time breeding a dog so im new at it so if anyone does know how soon into the pregnancy you can tell please let me know also. 63 days is not as long as a person but still its long when your not sure if the dog is even preg . lol thanks

I have a 4 year old female chocolate lab (Baby) and a 1 year old male cockapoo (Bear), and we know that Bear spends all of his time outside trying to mount Baby. He is still being crate trained so we know that they arent misbehaveing at night. Baby has just become noticeably wider, especially around her rib cage, and she seems slower, calmer and spacey. Also her nipples have grown slightly and when my dad squezzed one a liquid came out. When Baby and Bear are outside Bear pees directly on Baby. Baby's appitite has only slightly increased. We read about false pregnancy, and want to know how we can tell them apart, becuase we dont want to have her scaned if there is no need to. Also the vet said she would have to be atleast 5 weeks along, and we honestly don't know, becuase Bear has been "trying" to mount her for about 2 months. Help!!!!

dogs are pregnent for about 63 days and u can tell there pregnent by how big there boobs are becuase they carrie alot of milk while they are carring there babies you ban also feel the ribs on the dogs stomache.

Dogs are Pregnant for 60-63 days. There teats don't change or fill up with milk until a couple days before the dog gives birth. Some signs of pregnancy in a dog are appetite change, your dog acting different, and an enlargement of the stomach. Normally you will be able to feel kicking of puppies in the 4th-5th week.Not any sooner. But if your dog hasn't gone into heat then your dog probably isn't pregnant.

My dog was on heat about two weeks before we suspected she was pregnant. Now her belly has gotten a little bigger and her vulva is swolen also... her appitite has changed (more picky with good foods) and her behaviour has changed too. I don't know exactly when she may have mated, and I was wondering if there is anything we should be doing differently in this stage?

Yes if your dog is sick ..usually once per day then this is also a sign. My dog mated 2 weeks ago as we are breeding her for a litter. Her signs are slightly swollen tit areas and rear end. As well as the slight sickness so all being good ..she is pregnant

Hello I have a Pit bull that we found abandon in the desert.Now when we got her her teats were already swallon and she was kinda thick.We already had a male dog in the house and we think they mated but now he doesnt try to hump her anymore shes been humping him shes been really routy she digs into the carpet blankets were ever she lays down .I want to know if anyone can help us if shes pregnant.But im also very worried she ran on top of the neighbors covertable and fell threw when the neighbor seen what had happened he slamed her on her back she dosent seem to be in any pain how will i know if she was pragnant and lost the puppies?

hi my name is Katie and we think my dog is pregnant!she is almost a year Nov 32.2003 the thing is we have never had a dog before and... this is the first time,the last time she was in heat for was about 4 months ago in the summer and we never saw who she had done it with so we don't know who the father to the puppies are gonna be we really think shes pregnant because she acts so much differently and she has ate alot and has gained alot of wait and also her teats have grown in size too. she is now in her 4 months if she is pregnant and we don't know how to tell or what we are really looking for or how long it is before she would be due? thanks bye now!!

I have a pug that is a little over a year old. She was in heat and our male pug has been all over her but we have never actually seen him get it in or stuck for that matter. We have seen some signs that might point to pregnant but not sure. Do they have to actually get "stuck" to get pregnant?

just last week my female dog (jack russell terrier) was left alone on accident with a male (toy fox terrier). i was wondering about how soon we can tell if she got pregnant or not. they are not fixed so it is a possibility.

your dog has to be in heat to get pregnant, you can't miss it, they menstruate like a human does. and as far as the possible pregos, take them to the vet, to make sure that the dog is getting proper nutrition and to count how many pups, that way when she is done delivering, you know how many for sure and know that she is done.

If you think your dog might be pregnant the best thing to do id to go to teh vets. They will be able to tell you straight away and may be able to perform an ultrasound on your dog to confirm pregnancy and the number you are expecting. Do not risk your dogs health by ignoring the change in your dog. You will only have to pay a few pounds to answer your question. Good luck to you all.

My dog mated when she was in heat. I can't tell if she is pregnant the reason why is my family members say no but i think she is. Well her nipple got bigger but thats only because you can see a dark circle around it, it is swollen. She been acting weird, sleeping a lot. She is a little over weight so i can't tell if she is gained any weight. It been about a month when she mated. I do want to bring her to the vet but i don't want to unless i know she is for sure. You know how much vet visits cost. I would be very thankful if anyone can help me.

Dogs are pregnant 58-66 days(about 9 weeks) from the first day of mating so by the time you read this your dog should be showing alot.If she mated there is a good chance she is pregnant and I know sleeping more is sometimes a symptom of pregnancy but she could be having false pregnancy too. If you find out she is pregnant you should start exercising her since healthy dogs have less complications in labor. Taking her to the vet would probably be the best thing to do. I'm pretty inexperienced too so I do alot searches on the internet and find helpful information there. Hey, it's free so it couldn't hurt! Hope this helps!

look Muh dog is always tired shes a chihauh ha and usually playful she eats more and steals muh lunch like everyday Ilove her a lot and shes muh baby her boobs are much bigger so is her vagina, i no her breed i no her age shes been in heat twice and she is a cutie all the dogs like her shes latina what else would you expect! her boobs where red but they have turned purpleish blueish theryes no blood in her pee and she sleeps more. im worried but we cant afford a vet my other friend says shes pregnant i believe her is she??

I have a teacup chihuahua, and she just got off of her first cycle, and her attitude has changed. She sleeps more, she doesn't eat as much, gained weight, her nipples are red and purple and swollen. I feel round hard things around her nipples, is she pregnant? And shes really small.
