Me and my wife have a female Shih Tzu and wondered how a King Charles would get along with her and would a male and female be better. The Shih Tzu is very fun-loving , likes to play and is very friendly.  Also why are King Charles spaniels so expensive -- are they rare?

I think a CKCS would get along great with your Shih Tzu. They love other dogs. They do say that if you have a male dog you should get a female or vise versa. As for why they are so expensive?? I think you will see the price of these dogs come down over the next few years. They are not what I would call rare. You may have to drive 150 miles or so depending on where you live just to look at one. But I have seen them for as little at $600 now I have not personally went and looked at those dogs for that price so what quality that is I do not know. But while you are looking and talking with breeders let them know you are looking for a pet quality dog and then a small flaw in there color or something is no big deal and you should not be paying for show quality. Pet quality in my area is around $1000.

You could look in shelters for a lower price or try to find a mix. If you are just looking for a playmate for dog, you may want to consider a less expensive one.
