I don't know why you would want to nor do I know how to but you can make it disappear temporarily by moving your mouse to the very top of the taskbar and moving downward.  The entire taskbar will disappear temporarily.

Google up Litestep, need to register, its free, and software is free aswell.

I have not gave it a go, but it looks like u can completely customize your desktop just like  linux. Win xp uses Explorer, but with Litestep u can add or remove items(have no icons or anything except a wallpaper) to a point where u could set it up to just right click on desktop for a drop down list to access everything.

I had another though aswell that might do the trick that your after.

Right click >Taskbar (the bottom of your screen where the default color is blue).

Select properties

Then add a tick in Auto-Hide the taskbar.

Once you do this it will disappear off screen untill u mouse down to it and then it springs up
