From the shell, how do I find the window ID of a given X window?  I need it to give to the ImageMagick "import" utility.  (Many utilities key off the window id, so I imagine there are many uses for this.)  I've seen references to a utility named xwinfo, but that seems to be obsolete.  Thanks for any help!

The name of the utility is xwininfo and it's not obsolete. Running xwininfo without arguments makes the mouse pointer look like a cross. Clicking on a window gives (among other things) the window id.

If you want to get the window id of windows with a certain name or class grepping on "xwininfo -root -children" is useful.

This for example give the ids of all Emacs windows:

xwininfo -root -children|grep '"Emacs"'|awk '{print $1}'
