Welcome to the world of 4-speed dodge/chrysler transmissions :-( The transmissions used in those vehicles are defective, and, as you probably also notice, but did not mention, shifting into reverse is not easy when it happens. You get locked into a weird 2nd gear. Replace transmission, until then, as a stop-gap measure, shift into neutral, at around 3000rpm, and turn key off, wait a sec, then re-start, car will find 1st gear again. Also, as you approach a stop sign, shift into neutral until you come to a complete stop, and engage drive again. This problem does not occur with 3-speed/3.0L engines.

Get a new speedometer, a shift that stifts to lower gear, and a new RPM.
