i am sure there are some smaller community colleges that offer those courses. or even a shop that would teach you. but the main schools and training places are on the main land. Probably near Washington D.C. and Richmond, or possibly even Arlington.

Seeing that there are about a zillion parlors in VA I would hope someone is teaching people how to do the work. Go ask the people doing the piercing where they got their training/certifications. You would also probably want to apprentice with one for a little while, kind of like tattoo artists, to get a feel for the reality of it. But I agree about DC and Richmond, maybe Norfolk or VA Beach as well.

There is no certification to become a piercer.  There are no laws saying that you need to take a class or become certified in order to pierce someone.  I am from Michigan and I know that is how the laws are here.  I took 6 months of anatomy in college just so I would have some experience with it.  Most tattoo and piercing shops will be more than happy to show new people the ropes.  It is not as hard as some may think.

There are only two "real" piercing schools I have found one in New Your and one in California. Both cost a pretty penny but are very good schools and cover everything you need to know as well as give you a certificate stating you went through the class and know how to pierce.  Even though you go through the classes you will still have to do an apprenticeship and work under someone for a while. Try checking out these links http://www.bodypiercinginfo.biz/index.html and http://www.bodydesigns.com/application.html let me know if any of this was any help at nyyce_gal@yahoo.com

I've done a lot of research on the subject calling some of the most reputable parlors I know for information on the subject... and I end up with almost the exact same answer each and every time. I live in Los Angeles California, and as far as the laws are around here there is no legal certification to become a piercer. Any jackass off the street can take a seminar class, deem him/herself a piercer, and end up really hurting people. The best thing to do is to find a parlor that is known for a clean environment and great work, start with an apprenticeship under them and move on from there. Yes, it initially is difficult to weasle your way in, but once you are in and well educated on the subject the possibilites are endless. Seminars are there to help experienced piercers with techniques, not newbies. Please, everyone remember that before you go out and skewer people alive.

Be very weary of on line or mail order training, it's a joke and does not train you to pierce. Someone mentioned Masstattoos. They have never offered body piercing courses and do not even perform piercing, they are tattoos only. Many shops offer apprenticing but the problem is that many of the piercers at these shops are not good and have no business training others. Also mentioned are Gauntlet and Fakir. Gauntley has been out of business for many years. Fakir offers wonderful piercing intensives. BUT they are not full piercer training!!!! They are intensives, brief intense courses meant for the already piercer or for beginners who will then go on to further training, alone they do not train you well enough to pierce others. There are a couple of shops out there that do offer paid training, most are basic. Miraculous Creations at 458 Park Ave. in Worcester Ma. offers FULL training for a fee. It's significant, yes. Any college is very expensive but you get good training. Piercing should be thought of the same way. You have a serious potential to injure and scar people for life, your training should be serious! Miraculous Creations offers everything from shop set up, equipment knowledge, info on tools and jewelry, cross contamination, how to deal with problem piercings, aftercare, placement, relaxation techniques, legalities, requirements, handling emergency situations such as when someone gets sick or passes out etc. This is a serious business people isn't it time we give this industry some respect!

I think if you go get a piercing then there is a good chance someone will screw it up.I mean LOOK at the people that do it, they dont have enough money to support a hamster. But if you do get it done and its wrong take it out it will grow over!!!

Do any of you know how much money there is to be made as a piercer?  I'd love to get into it, but I'd also love to make enough money to live off of.  They obviously don't make as much as a tattoo artist, but I'm just curious about what the like monthly or annual income would be.

Thanks!!

hiya - I would very much like to learn  to be a skilled, safe, and competent piercer, and I want to go beyond the basics. I may be interested in branding and tattoo work too. Tattoo work is the logical step for me because I am an artist, but right now, I want a business to pursue that satisfies my urge to add beauty to the world but lets me work on my stuff on my own time. I live in Clearwater, Florida, and all I can find is online stuff that doesn't sound overly reputable, plus one school in Boca Raton, that sounds promising, but is very far away and expensive. Any help anyone could give me and the faster the better would be very, very appreciated. Thanks, friends :-)

Has anyone heard anything about "The Tattoo and Piercing Institute" offered by Geo's Tat Shack? They offer on-line apprenticeship courses. I have been desperately looking for a body piercing apprenticeship in my area, but sadly none of the shops are available for training.

i would love to pursue a career in body piercing but unfortunately my parents do not approve at all and want me to do something boring that i dont like, like hardcore business work... so i am looking for like some piercing classes or something so i can learn for a small fee or free just some of the basics... it isnt that difficult i imagine.. i know that you need like a well lit place and it has to be clean and you need like stainless steal surgical needles and to make sure they are the same gauge as the jewelry and wear latex gloves and always dispose needles.. so yea all the basic stuff i know.. just the piercing part im not skilled in.. i know you obviously just sort of shove the needle where you want the piercing but there must be more to it.
