What year did  rickenbacker  start making the checkerboard binding and what year did they stop? When did they change the Old mechanical tuners to the new stile on the 4001 series bass?     thank you

I don't know when they started it (I'd guess late 50's early 60's) but 1973 seems to be the transition year for the 4001, as far as the change of features.  I have two '73 4001 basses.  The one made in March has checkerboard binding, the triangle inlays go the full width of the fretboard, and it has the split bridge.  The bass made in August doesn't have the checkerboard, the inlays do not go to the edge, and it doesn't have the split bridge.
