I have the same problem with my 95 Jetta.  Both my speedometer and tachometer work intermittently (i.e., either they both work or neither works).  I thought it might be a problem with the fuse, but the dealer thought this was highly unlikely.

I too have this problem.  So far I have been told the who Speedo and tack have to be replaced.

Has anyone resolved this issue.  I have a 1999 (old 99) TDI.

I have the same problem with my 1999 (actually late 1998) Jetta (2.0 liter, automatic).  I just spent $320 on a new instrument cluster (just the part, not installation) after my dealer's service rep suggested that the cluster had gone bad (coincidently, problems began after the dealer installed a new transmission).  I installed the new instrument cluster yesterday and, alas, the problem persists...no speedometer, fuel gage is "flaky", tachometer appears OK now, but I suspect it will cut in and out over the next few days.  At least the illumination on the automatic transmission indicator works now.  VW parts are WAY over-priced, and the service I've gotten (from "certified" dealer mechanics) has been marginal at best.

I am having the same problem!  I've heard a rumor that it has something to do with the radio...something about interference with the electronics

Yip, i have the same problem in my 95 VW Golf... I replaced the VSS on top of the manual transmission, but it didn't help. It does help when i wiggle the VSS wire, so it looks like the problem is probably a wire. If you notice most of these important wires run under the battery... and a little battery corrosion/acid could have easily been washed off, and worked it's way down into the wires. My tach is working fine... so I'mpretty sure it's not a dash problem.

I have a 96 jetta with the same problem, it seems that the gages are getting a weird signal which causes the speedometer needle to buzz and the tachometer to be completely unresponsive.

It seems like when it sits for a while it can occasionally come back on but I haven't noticed a pattern.

when I turn the key to accessory the spedo needle does its little buzzing thing, and tonight I noticed that both were working while I was driving the car, but when I turned the key off, and the car wen through its shutdown sequence, the needle buzzed  briefly.

I think that the problem might be in the signal coming into the gage cluster, but haven't figured it out. any ideas?

I have the same problem on my '95 Jetta as Dan Kelly. Both the tach and the speedometer work intermittently.  Stupid factory Service Manual is worthless for this - it doesn't even mention the tach.

Mine is doing the same thing. I have changed the speed sensor that sits in the trani. I have checked the wiring. I changed the voltage regulator in the speedometer PC board. All to no avail. So at this point I suspect is either the ASIC or the cars computer. There is another power transistor I might try, but is highly unlikely.

I have the same problem in my 1997 jetta trek.  The speedometer and tachometer will either both work, or neither will work.  And it is totally random.

I have a 97 jetta, and I have been experiencing the same problem. My speedometer and tachometer are only working intermittently. My mechanic has not been able to figure out the root of the problem. Do you have an answer? If so, please share. Thanks.
