Plants go through photosynthesis, which needs sunlight to work, and which makes the plant energy to grow, so a plant in the shade doesn't get as much energy to grow as the one in the shade because less sunlight is hitting it.

Plants need seven things in order to grow; room to grow, temperature, light, water, air, nutrients, and time (University of Illinois). All plants need room to grow (University of Illinois). The Stem and Leaves of the plant need space so leaves can expand and carry out the job of making food also known as the process of photosynthesis (6CO2 + 6H2O + light energy  C6H12O6  + 6O2 ) (University of Illinois). Under the soil the roots also need room to grow (University of Illinois). Plants that grow in smaller spaces will have their roots crowded, and that can result in a smaller plant due to little growth (University of Illinois). Some plants like warmer temperatures while others may prefer cooler temperatures (University of Illinois). It all depends on the plant type for the best growth (University of Illinois). It is always good to know where plants come from so you can provide the right temperature for them  (University of Illinois). Plants need sunlight to grow. Light is a part of the photosynthesis equation, meaning that light is used to produce food for the plant (University of Illinois).  Windows facing the south or west have the best light (University of Illinois). It is possible to tell when a plant is not’t getting enough sunlight because its stems will be thin and the plant will lean toward the light (University of Illinois). Water is another important aspect in the plant (University of Illinois).  It affects the ability to make and move nutrients (University of Illinois). Water (H2O) is also a part of the photosynthesis equation (University of Illinois).  Without water or with too much water, a plant dies (University of Illinois). Plants use carbon dioxide in the air and release oxygen (University of Illinois). Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is in the first part of the photosynthesis reaction and oxygen (O2) is in the second part of the reaction (University of Illinois). Plants need time to grow (University of Illinois).  It does not’t just happen over night. In this experiment, the variable tested was sunlight.  Sunlight has effects on the growth of a plant as previously stated.  The way it works is that leaves are opaque, meaning they allow light through, during the day, light energy from the sun hits the leaf and shines through it (Galbraith 2001).  On the under side of a leaf there are Guard cells, which are two cells that protect the opening called the stoma or stomata (Galbraith 2001).  When light energy hits the leaf it stimulates the active transport of Potassium (Galbraith 2001). Active transport is the cellular process of moving substances across a living membrane (Galbraith 2001).  The stimulation of Potassium causes water to rush into the guard cells (Galbraith 2001).  The guard cells buckle and open due to osmotic pressure (diffusion of water from high concentration to lower concentration) (Galbraith 2001). The open guard cells expose the stoma, which allows carbon dioxide in, and oxygen out (Galbraith 2001).  Carbon dioxide is needed for photosynthesis and oxygen is a waste product in photosynthesis reactions (Galbraith 2001).  The water in the guard cells is lost through the opening causing transpiration to occur (Galbraith 2001).  Transpiration is when water is lost the leaves, causes the water from the roots to be pulled up to replace the water loss (Galbraith 2001).  Water is brought up to the leaves through the xylem (Galbraith 2001). Xylem is the water carrying vascular tissue that starts in the roots and goes up the stem to the leaves and is made of tracheids (Galbraith 2001).  In the roots water enters the roots through diffusion (Galbraith 2001).  Light energy and transpiration pull the water upward through the tracheids and because water is polar it sticks together (Galbraith 2001).

Sunlight is the biggest energy source that plants have. They need chlorophyll(photosynthasis) to keep them selves green and keep them healthy, and to do that sunlight from the sun plays a big role, so I think that's why plants in sunlight grow better in sunlight than in the shade.

Plants need the sun because they need photosynthesis to occur.  photosynthesis is a process that all plants go through.  in photosynthesis plants take in water through their stem, and carbon dioxide through the stoma.  the stoma is the under side of leaves where carbon dioxide comes into the plant.  then it absorbs sunlight.  it absorbs sunlight because it has a pigment in it called chlorophyll. this is what makes plants green.  then it produces Gluecose and oxygen.  it uses the gluecose  and oxygen in another process called respiration

Green plants and certain types of bacteria and algae are the primary producers because they are the ones that produce usable energy for the rest of the living organisms on earth. They use energy from the sun to make sucrose, glucose, and other compounds that other life forms can eat and "burn" for energy.  In each one of those sugar molecules a little bit of the sun's energy is stored in a form that we can call chemical energy. Since plants have no mouths or digestive systems, how do they get their energy and nutrition?

Plants make themselves out of carbon dioxide from the air and water and a few minerals from the soil. They do this with the aid of sunlight, in a process called PHOTOSYNTHESIS, which means "putting together with light."
This process was not always obvious to people. In fact, up until about 350 years ago, everybody basically agreed with Aristotle's idea that plants just sucked their food up out of the soil as a pure "nutrient fluid."

Plants use the energy of the sun to capture carbon dioxide from the air. Plants use carbon dioxide as a building block to make sugars and other carbohydrates.

Pigments in the leaves of plants absorb sunlight.

in a plant cell there are chloroplasts amount other organelles in the chloroplasts the process of photosynthesis is preformed where CO2 and H2O are combined to make C6H12O6 (glucose) and 6 O2's sunlight is needed to break the bonds between the water and carbon dioxide and form the glucose after which the glucose is then sent to the mitochondria where in the process of cellular respiration it converted to O2 and ATP (use-able chemical energy) which is then send to ribosomes and other organelles to be made into proteins and hormones and such but if there isn't any direct sunlight the photosynthesis will be slowed down slowing down the whole process of growing. probably a bunch of spelling and grammatical errors and such but whatever I'm16

plants need sunlight because the chlorophyl aborbs it give itself energy. the plant combines carbon dioxide from animals and water to make sugar and oxygene. The plant uses the sugar to make protein and releases the oxygene. Also with the four main elements photosynthesis, photomorphogenesis, photoperiodism and phototropism the plant can produce its food so it can live and grow
