How can windows media player playback ".m2v" bitstreams? If that is not possible, where can I find high rate MPEG2 bitstreams, playale by windows media player?

You need the appropriate MPEG-2 codec from a 3rd party.  Microsoft only provides MPEG-1 codecs with mediaplayer.  ".m2v" files are typically MPEG2 PES or Elementary Video streams.  Any MPEG-2 codec should handle them.

I have a similar question:

Can MPEG2 play in any Windows Media Player Version or only in Version 9?

I want to send a mpeg2 clip in a CD. I am not sure whether he has WMP. Is there any standard player for playing MPEG2 so that I can send that also along in the CD.

Thanks!!

Nice day!!

You can play MPEG2 files and DVDs in Media Player (Any version from 7 I should think) but you need an MPEG2 plug in.
This is because any software that can play MPEG2 has to be licensed by The Motion Pictures Experts Group.
This costs a small amount (around $10 per licence) but as Microsoft release Media player for free, you must pay for a "licensed" plug-in for it.
Further info can be found on the Microsoft website.
Also any 3rd party dvd application you may buy, eg, cyberlinks powerdvd, intervideos windvd, automatically register their mpeg2 decoder with Media player making it possible to play back mpeg2 in WMP.
However I'd suggest either the WinDVD app or plug-in, depending on weather you want to watch DVD'sor just material you've got form the internet, respectively.

Hope this helps,
The Cageybee

Having Cyberlink PowerDVD does not ensure that MPEG2 files will work in Windows Media Player (especially with powerDVD 5.0).  I think the only solution is to buy a plug-in for WMP.

Daniel: Why would you say that Winamp doesn't support M2V? Did you even bother to check, or did check but are using a really old version?

What I'm trying to say is that Winamp 5.x DOES have M2V support and you might want to do a bit better research before you go spreading false information.

Also, as Manu999 stated above, you can simply rename an M2V file to MPG or MPEG and it will play Windows Media Player.

you can download the plugin for m2v files over here:

http://www.tranceaddict.com/files/m2v_codec.exe

m2v files can be played well without a single error (if the file is ok) on win dvd or any dvd player software. but sometimes, it depends on your video card accelerator. it works fine on my geforce 2.

basically you don't have to buy anything. All these people that want you to buy something don't know what they are talking about =). No offense. Go to google and find some free mpeg2 codecs. Actually ill do that for you even.

http://www.free-codecs.com/download/Stinky_MPEG_2_Codec.htm

This is the one i have installed and it works perfectly with media player 10. I can play m2v extensions. When you open m2v just tell it to play with media player and when media player asks you if you want to play it anyway (since it says its not a supported extension click yes) and it will play.

I've tried multiple free codecs from ffdshow, AC3filter, and a couple of others. So far only 2 of them work, but the ones that work, picture doesn't take up the full screen. It used to say error downloading codec when I just had ffdshow and AC3Filter, then for some reason it would play. I just installed cyberlink PowerDVD and it fullscreens perfect.

Dudes, if a player is able or not to play m2v files it doesn't deppend on the player itself the most of times. I think that the  codec packs sucks (like nimo or k-lite) because gives more troubles than solutions.

Some players has the codecs by itself, like the fantastic mplayer (dos command line player) or the media player classic.

I recommend to use a post-processing filter called ffdshow; it is great to decode almost any video and sound stream if you want to use any media player.

My english is very poor, so I must give to you an apology.

Nero showtime plays M2V files very well.  Also intervideo Win DVD 7.  Although I have the codecs from both of these products that play the files.  Usually Windows Media player will "borrow" the codec and play it also, but for some reason not with these files.

Then, install it.  Now clik on any MPEG2 file and it will play, even with a long play-bar for easy locating the part you want to watch.
