That is not true. Your computer can only hold so much ram before your mother board will burn up. I forget how to check how much you can have but when i find out again i will reply again.

You must check with your computer manufacturer.  A motherboard only has so many spaces that ram can go and no, your motherboard won't "burn up" if you put too much in.  A motherboard can only support certain types of ram.  Currently there are 2 popular types.  DDR is the newest and if you have a Dell or anything of the like you will probably have that kind.  Visit www.crucial.com to find out more detailed information about your computers ram capabilities.  Download their automated system checker to see how much ram you have and how much you can possibly have.  Hope this helps more than the 2 genius'sabove me because neither one of them knows what they are talking about.

OK to really tell your gonna need to open your tower, Each computer has a set amount of "Slots" you can put RAM sticks in.  These ram sticks are roughly 6 inches long and look like a green stick with a few little black squares on them.  They com in a verity of sizes, 128, 256, 511 ect on a base 2 scale in either single or double density. Usally the slots are on the lower portion of the tower near the back.  They have two little clips on either end, push them out and set the stick in and slide the clips on and your done.

Well this is very Easy. You can go to your System Information on Accessories -  System Tools and select your system Information ( XP  edition ) and check how much Physical memory its allowed on your motherboard... most of the computers supports 2GB memory Ram.

Ram is handeled by the amount of MHz or mega-hertz you can check this by right clicking on computer and going into properties then click general and read you can also check this by looking in you user manuel for your computer if i remember right if you have a pentium III processior with 996MHz or 1.0GHz(Giga-Hertz) then you can handel 512mb(mega-bytes) 647MHz Can take 256 and a computer with any less MHz than than you should buy a new one because you are very outa date hell even having the pentium III make you outa date Pentium IV can usually hold any thing between 512-2Gigs in Ram and core-2-duo can hold a lot I have never tried but im pretty sure you can hold up to 6gigs
