Depends on your Operating system.

Most unixes (incl. LINUX, BSD, Mac) already have one built-in.

Windows XP comes with a simple firewall (no egress filtering). This stops incoming connection attempts but does not alert you when malware on your computer tries to make outgoing connections.

Most 'internet protection' packages these days bundle a firewall with virus scanner and malware scanner etc. etc.

There are lots of free firewalls for windows, personally I like Kerios.

If you have an ADSL router simply turn off port-forwarding and UPnP and you get a (ingress only) firewall.
