Type 2 diabetes is very strongly inherited. When parents have type 2 diabetes, children should assume they will too, and start prevention measures early in life. Type 1 diabetes has only a very weak inherited component. One parent with type 1 diabetes may raise the risk to around 5% in children (compared with under 1% for the general population). Only if both parents have type 1 diabetes is the risk high, and still only about 30%, much less than for type 2. Edward Reid
