Well, this is a very hard thing to determine so I'll give you the basics.
1. Dogs can go into heat younger than half a year or more than a year old. Mine went in about a year old.
2. The stage when a female goes into heat is an average of 9 days, but it can range from 1-17 days!! The time that they are actually in heat has the same average but can last 3-21 days!! So there is a huge variance and only your dog can tell you her timing.
3. Signs of heat are swelling of the vulva, vaginal discharge (that is bloody in color but may turn to a milky color later on)
4. If she breeds and is receptive, she will be pregnant for 58-66 days. Signs of pregnancy are a swelled tummy, increase of appetite, and lying around more. Her teats may swell up too. There is also A pregnancy test out for dogs called repro check. (ask your vet). This may be a good thing to do since if a dog does not get pregnant during heat she will show all the signs of pregnancy when she isn't pregnant because her body was signaled that she was supposed to be bred.
Also i thought in case you wanted to know, you can get away with alot in this breed because they are stronger than most breeds. I didn't know much about dogs when I got mine because they were just pets so I made the following mistakes. I didn't know my dog was in heat, let my two inexperienced dogs breed for their first time together, did not increase her feeding when I thought she was pregnant, did not decrease her exercise, left for two weeks over the time she was due cause i didn't know she was ready to whelp, and she had her pups without me there in the middle of the biggest snowstorm we had that year, along with the male whom i had failed to take out of the pen before i left. She took care of them for a week till I got home and all of the pups survived and were as healthy and rolly polly as could be. This is a breed to start out breeding with because as you can see they can put up with ALOT of mistakes!!! But for a piece of advice, Pups are a HUGE responsibility and I don't think half the people who breed are ready for this. They cost enough that you sure can't make much money off of them! Make sure you read up on breeding, pregnant dog care, and whelping. You won't regret being prepared with all the pros and cons that are involved!!!
