SUBJECT: Removing links to other Spreadsheets

I seem to have picked up a link to a remote workbook which no longer exists on my computer and a link I do not require. The result being that each time I load this particular workbook is comes up with the following message:
“The workbook you opened contains automatic links to information in another workbook. Do you want to update with changes made to the other workbook?”

I need to know how to remove this link because I’ve been through the worksheets and can’t find a link to this so-called “Phantom” file.

There are few options for searching the link. 1. Go to Edit and then Link, if you have Excle XP then you will have the option "Break the Link" which will automaticly remove the link. 2. If you do not have the XP version then Press Ctrl F and type "Phantom" in the box and click find. Excle will automaticly stop on the cell which has that link in. If you have more then one tab in this file then you have to rapeat this action on each sheet.

Both ZDNet.com (who was first with it) and now Microsoft have an applet you can download--Dellinks.exe, which I needed for Excel97, which I still use. Wizard & instructions are explicit enough to help you immediately. When using it for the first time, be sure you "unhide" your personal.xls wkbk and close it.  It won't work otherwise. The process will save a copy of the workbook containing the description & location of the links removed should you wish to restore any of them.

Easy method that USUALLY works:

Open Filename.xls (your file).
Save as Filename1.xls (put a 1 behind the name, now you have 2 files).
With Filename1.xls open, hit Edit-Links.
Change links to go to Filename.xls.
Save file.
Close it.
Delete filename.xls
Rename filename1.xls to filename.xls

Just came across the same problem with "phantom" links in excel 2000.  Even after searching and deleting all the links, Excel thought they still existed.  I went to "edit"/"links"/"change source" and changed the reference to my current workbook.  That deleted all of the links.
