my dog had her pups about 8 hours or so ago now there is a very dark green to possibly black discharge.  How worried should I be? Is this normal.  She seems to be acting different in the last hour or so. Almost like she needs to deliver again.

My dog has been in labor for close to 24 hours. She also went hours without delivering a puppy. I noticed dark green discharge and within a few minutes, out came a puppy. I got scared because she went so long between puppies and I knew she had more. We rushed to the vet only to go home with a high bill and 2 more puppies born without any intervention. We were sent home knowing that there is one more puppy. She just had more dark green discharge, so I am expecting a puppy any minute. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we went to the vet. It set my mind at ease, and you never know what could have happened. Chances are, she's fine and will be delivering again soon, but if you are overly worried go to the vet. Our pets are worth the money.

This is normal.  It should subside in a day or so. If you can keep her from eating the placenta's at birth (except one or two), you will have less of a problem.

It is not uncommon for there to be long periods of time between puppies, but if it exceeds 2 hours call your vet. Sometimes you can request a shot of oxitosen induce labor after 2 hours. It is good for your dog to eat the after birth it helps them so they are not hungry right after delivery, and it is all in all good for them.

I had the same worry, I did all my research but no one told me about the green discharge. I called several vets and got different opinion from each of them, I did some searching on the internet and found this: www.hilltopanimalhospital.com/whelping5.htm

they say "the green color comes from biliverdin, a pigment in the placental band, attached to the uterus. As the placenta detaches from the uterus, the pigment is released. Lochia maybe discharge for 2-3 weeks post whelping."

I hope this helps, becasue it really eased my mind when I read it.

My Golden Retriever is 4 days past her due date.. I can't take her to the vet because they're closed now. Is there anything I should do? Her temp has gone down to 98 and back to 101 and then back down to 99 and now its at 99.7. She just lays there so I guess it's good that she's not panicky. Is there anything I should do to "induce" her labor or stimulate contractions?

when my dog gave birth to her puppies she was covered in green stuff. The puppies while in the sacs were also covered in green stuff. What does this mean? Will the puppies and my dog be ok?
