I too own the same car - a 95 sebring LXi. The knocking sounds like the fuel solenoid, which is located on the top passenger side of the motor, towards the front of the car. This solenoid is responsible for sending unused gas back to the tank. It makes a knocking sound, which is more prominent in colder weather. It sounds as though perhaps this may be your problem, although I am not sure if this solenoid would cause your car to die.
