This is the history:
In 1969, a Los Angeles youth named Raymond Washington, 15, organized a group of other neighborhood youths and started a gang called the Baby Avenues. The Baby Avenues Gang began using the name Avenues Cribs since members lived on the avenue (Central Avenue). Crib members would wear blue scarves (now called bandannas) around their necks or heads. The color blue became their representative color.
Piru:
Once, Piru Street was alongside with the Crips. Once they were also known as Piru Street Crips. Before the inicial Bloods gang there were also sets like Bounty Hunters, Swan, Athens Park that were down with Piru. During the summer of 1972, the Crips from Compton, and the Pirus had a conflict, and an all out rumble ensued. The Pirus were badly outnumbered, and the Crips prevailed. So the next day they formed a meeting between different sets like Bounty Hunters, Swans, Valentine's, Bishops, Pueblos, Lueders Park Hustlers, Athens Park Boys and the Denver Lanes. The Crips had murdered an L.A. Brim member earlier that year, so the Pirus asked the Brims to attend the meeting too. And so they formed the Piru set (there was no Blood set yet). Because the crips wore Blue to identify themselves, the Pirus came out with the color red to identify themselves too. And because they wore Red, people started calling them Bloods. The word Damu, comes from the Swahili word for Blood. Bloods often call other Bloods by names like Dawgs. The reason for this is: Piru is also a bulldog type (dog's pedigree). That's why they also say thing like Bull (Bloods Usually Live Longer).
The number 5:
In Chicago, just like in Los Angeles, there was also gang violence. Amongst the first sets in Chicago were The Black P Stones (the oldest set in Chicago), Latin Kings, Vice Lords, Gangster Desciples, Black Desciples. Because there were so many different sets, they decided to create 2 central gangs. The People Nation and the Folks Nation. Under the People Nation, there were sets like Latin Kings, Latin Counts, Vice Lords, Black P Stones, Party Players. And under the Folks Nation there were sets like Gangster Desciples, Simon City Royals, Insane Deuces, Black Desciples. Because a lot of people affiliated with Peoples were Muslims, and the number 5 being the most important number in Islam, The People Nation adopted itself to the number 5. And because the Blood sets are affiliated with the People Nation, we, as Bloods, also use the number 5, and our left side to identify ourselves. Among other identifiers for the People Nation are: the 21 bricks piramid, playboy bunny, Fub clothing (number 5), the cane and many more.
The number 6:
The B.G.D. set (Black Gangster Desciples) were the first ones to come out with the idea to create one central gang, aka the Folks Nation. They use the number 6 which comes from the six-pointed star (star of David) which was the nickname of the founder of the Folks Nation. Other identifiers for the Folks Nation are: The pitchforks, tattoos with a devil's tail, and any clothing that has the number 6 on it.
