I cant get past that big floating guy past gonarch and...

I cant get past that big floating guy past gonarch and everybody else. He just shoots plasma balls (green) and sends me to these other places. When I get back I shoot his charger things on the sides and then his head opens up . I float up and fall right through him. HOW DO I DEFEAT HIM!
