What is the role of the ozone in UV protection?

Stratospheric ozone absorbs ultraviolet radiation to shield effectively the Earth’s surface from high energy radiation.
   This occurs in the upper atmosphere where there is molecular oxygen (O2) around. What happens is that when the UV rays strike oxygen molecules, the energy is used up to break the double bonds in three oxygen molecules to form two O3 molecules, known as ozone. This layer of ozone protects the Earth from high energy radiation

uv rays come in three types and the ozone layer only blokes one. type c is the uv ray that would burn everything
