On August 6 and 9, 1945, the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki were destroyed by the first atomic bombs used in warfare.

The first atomic bomb ever to be used in a military operation was dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan On August 6, 1945 at 8:16:02 a.m. Hiroshima time. The bomb, affectionately named "Little Boy," exploded 1,900 feet above the courtyard of Shima Hospital, with a force equivalent to 12,500 tons of TNT. By the end of 1945, 140,00 people had died as a direct result of the bombing. Within the following five years, another 60,000 would die of bomb-related causes.

I'man American and i was quite appalled with the education i received on world war two. we were taught that the bombs led to the turning point in the war, when they were used AFTER Japan was actually defeated and leaving the war. it was disgraceful, in that 100x the people that died in 9/11 died for a show of military prowess, scientific ingenuity, retaliation for a recent bombing (Pearl Harbor) and a fear tactic to dissuade further assaults. Essentially, the same things that provoked 9/11.

History is not BORING! How can you understand the present if you don't understand the past? There are a lot of things that we can still learn from our past and if we stop looking then there will never be peace! For instance if you look at the holocaust in WW2! Most people would say that it was a terrible thing and that it should never happen again but actually genocide is still happening today! Just look at the Middle East! And that's supposed to be the Holy Land!
P.S. The answer to your question is YES if you hadn't already noticed! In fact these answers have helped me with my History home work!

Yes the Atomic bomb was used in World War 2. The use of the atomic bomb did not end the entire war although it did end the Japanese involvement in the war. Fat Man, dropped after Little Boy, was dropped on August 9, 1945. Japan surrendered on August 10th, 1945. That did not end the war completely but it did end the Japanese involvement.

all you people that think the a-bomb was bad.... how about this, it was said by the Japanese emperor that they would never surrender until the very last man is dead. Since the A-bomb was such a huge weapon the Japanese realized they couldnt fight against it and surrendered. however if they would have just used normal bombing Japan wouldnot have surrendered. and alot more people would have died in fact probably over 600,000 would have been killed. If you think the use of the A-bomb was bad at that time.. think again.. its just like the situation of Dieppe, before D-day it was a massacre but they lost about 5,000 men but totally learned new tactics that helped them keep a minimum at D-day. and by the way History is not stupid, how will we know  whats wrong and right if we dont learn from our mistakes.. if we didnt look at our history.. we wouldnt get anywhere.. im praying that u stupid people who asked the question are not American.... first of all im Canadian and i know more about u then the half of you.. and no. i dont live in a igloo.

yes the bomb was used, it was used to help contribute to ending ww2. even if america didnt use it i think that they still woud'vewon but the bombs in hiroshima and nagasaki just flat out put china in defeat. nuclear bombs are massively powerful killing machines. i think that not only was it cruel for the us to use them but also it was useless because it wasnt necassary because like i said they were already on the track for victory. the bomb killed 140,000 people and then 60,000 after the explosion ended. i think that they were testing the bomb because they named it "little boy" which pretty much gives off the thought that they were just messing around with precausious measures. the bombs were dropped in hiroshima on August 6 1945 and then 3 days later in Nagasaki. thats all i have to say. later

The atomic bomb was first used in warfare at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in August 1945 and the bomb played a key role in ending World War Two. The atomic bomb (A bomb), created via the Manhattan Project, was first exploded at the top secret base of Alamogordo on July 16th, 1945.

A reconstruction of 'Little Boy' at the Imperial War Museum
The bomb that dropped on Hiroshima was code-named 'Little Boy'. The amount of energy 'Little Boy' generated when it exploded was the equivalent of a 15 kiloton TNT explosion - yet the above photograph shows that the bomb itself was relatively small despite its huge explosive capability. Half of that energy was consumed when the explosion generated an ultra high air pressure which resulted in a very strong bomb blast. One third of the rest of the energy created was consumed when the explosion generated heat, while the rest of the energy that was created was consumed in the creation of radiation.
Directly beneath the centre of the explosion (the hypocentre), the temperature rose to about 7,000 degrees F. Directly underneath the hypocentre and not far from this point the damage was massive. Yet buildings etc that had areas protected by a human body were relatively unchanged as the body had taken the full impact of the heat and had absorbed it. The heat created was so great that clothes caught fire on people over one and a quarter miles from the centre of the explosion; roof tiles a third of a mile away melted.
'Little Boy' also created ultra high pressure. The wind speed on the ground directly beneath the explosion was believed to have been 980 mph and this speed generated a pressure the equivalent to 8,600 lbs per square feet. One third of a mile from the bomb blast, the wind speed was thought to be 620 mph which created a pressure of 4,600 lbs per square feet. Such a force would simply flatten most buildings - which is why the post-bomb photographs of Hiroshima show barely any buildings standing. One mile from the centre of the blast, the wind speed was still 190 mph and this speed created a pressure the equivalent of 1,180 lbs per square feet. Such a force would still be very capable of bringing down the most sturdy of buildings.
The explosion of 'Little Boy' also created alpha, beta, gamma and neutron rays. Alpha and beta rays were absorbed by the air but gamma and neutron rays did reach the ground and it was these rays that affected the people of Hiroshima. Radiation poisoning killed many people in the city. Nearly all the people who survived the bomb blast but lived within a half-mile of it died within 30 days. People who entered the zone around where the bomb had been most devastating were also exposed to very high levels of radiation if they did so in the first 100 hours after the explosion.
Deaths from radiation were very common for years after the explosion of 'Little Boy'. The city government of Hiroshima kept records from 1952 on but it is estimated that from August 1946 to 1952, some 60,000 people died of radiation poisoning - an average of 8,500 a year. Maybe as many as 200,000 people died as a result of 'Little Boy'.
'Little Boy' and 'Fat Man' (dropped on Nagasaki) had some differences in the way they were designed. 'Little Boy' was a 'gun-type' weapon shooting a piece of sub-critical U-235 into another -cup-shaped piece to create a super-critical mass - and a nuclear explosion. 'Little Boy', below, weighed about 9,000lbs, was 28 inches in diameter and 10 feet long.

'Fat Man', used an implosion method, with a ring of 64 detonators shooting segments of Plutonium together to obtain the super-critical mass that would create a nuclear explosion. More heavy than 'Little Boy', 'Fat Man' weighed 10,000 lbs and was 10 feet 8 inches long and had the explosive equivalent of 20,000 tons of high explosives - about the same as 'Little Boy'.

dude copied what he wrote from a website and yes the bombs were dropped duhh the two elements used were uranium and plutanium. The explosions starts with an atom being split from either the plutanium or the uranium. That atom breaks open then another breaks open and it causes a fission chain reaction. All the atoms breaking up in one of the elements used causes high amounts of radiation killing thousands of people near the bombs explosion place. I did not copy this i learned it from a veriaty of sources i'm 11 by the way and the idea of the bomb came from Einstien when he split open a atom.

Look, if you didn't know that the Atomic Bomb was used in World War 2, then something is wrong. When you're younger, you learn about Albert Einstein and the Atomic Bomb. that should give you some hint as to if it was ever used or not. The Atomic Bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima was 29" inches diameter, 126" in length, and weighed 9,700 pounds and that was only the little boy. the bomb they dropped on Nagasaki was dropped by a B-29 "Bock'scar". You don't have to be a history teacher or a really smart person to know this, all you have to do is pay attention in class because this involved your country and you should know. You earn grades and credits from this stuff and I suggest you grab a book or hop on the web and type in "World War 2 and the Atomic Bomb" in the search engine and do some reading. While you're at it, look up the Holocaust too, since you probably don't know much about that either!

Yes the A-bomb was used. your not stupid or retard or dumb. These people have nothing else better to do. It’s not quite clear that the bomb dropped on Hiroshima was intended for any of the military bases. The bomb was dropped in the center of the city. Miles from either the army or navy base. Few people have argued that the bombing of Hiroshima was intended as  a clever strike on a certain target. Upon the successful testing of the atomic bomb, the Americans believed Japan could be forced to quickly surrender. Japan made no response, so they were pretty much  refusing the last chance to negotiate for peace. I bet if you ask after of these idiots all they could tell you was  that yes an atomic bomb was used.any further information they would have to research on the Internet.I am a history student in one of the best classes. I learn about the World Wars in like 4th grade.

I dont think that the American people who stand for freedom and liberty would easily take lives for an experiment.
The Japanese people are wonderful and all, they have this sense of pride and honor, but their pride kept them from recognizing their defeat.  I dont believe that they realized that it was over until a bomb dropped from the sky (literally).
I think that many wars need something final to end them or else you find wars that continue and never really stop.

A lot of people will say yes, but I say no. The reason why is because thousands of innocent people were killed and maimed including children, and children are still being born with abnormalities. If they hadn't dropped the bombs more soldiers would have died probably yes, but that's what soldiers are trained to do... fight and accept death if it comes.
And besides, the war was coming to an end anyway, so, there was no real reason to ‘waste’ a perfectly good bomb to end a war that was almost over in the first place. We should have saved the bomb for a war after WW2 that would most likely last a long time and destroy many things, places, and peoples’ lives. That way, we could end a long war fast, therefore sacrificing soldiers’ lives then, and saving even more now and in the future.

First and  foremost, you people need to go to grammar school.  Secondly, if have had any schooling at all and are still oblivous to the us of the atom bomb during ww2, you dont deserve to live. The atom bomb was used on aug6th and 9th because the U.S. Military Intelligence had good reason to beleive that a Japanese submarine, carrying an atomic bomb, was due to attack San Fraciso on aug 12th.  That was the first reason that we dropped the atomic bomb over japan. The second is we simply didnt want the lose of american life need to invade a country that would fight to the last man. You  could see how disterbed and desperite the Japanese people were  when the piolets resulted to kamakaze attaks on american vessels. Its sad to say but many more lives would have been lost, both American and Japanese, if the bomb hadnt been dropped. the Japanese officals told the people that the Americans would rape the women and kill the children so Japan would have defended itself to the lat man, women and child. If you would like to see the devistation that the bomb created go to www.hitorychannel.com for live footage

you stupid idiots.. the atom bombs were only used to end the war because people got sick of fighting.. the united states then became power hungry and made hundreds of thousands of these things. so everyone just shutup and listen to your history teachers. ANOTHER reason was that studies show that if the US did a land invasion like the beaches of normandy, there wouldve been more casualties. So shove it you dumbass people

The United States Army Air Force dropped two atomic bombs on the Japanese
cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the mornings of August 6 and August 9,
1945 during World War II. The goal was to secure the unconditional surrender
of Japan. At least 120,000 people died immediately from the two attacks
combined, and many more would die in years to come from the effects of
nuclear radiation. About 95% of the casualties were civilians. Japan sent
notice of its unconditional surrender to the Allies on August 15, a week
after the bombings. These bombings were the first and only nuclear attacks
in world history.

Listen people, all you need to do, is type it in google and all the information pops right up! its not that hard!

August 2, 1939 beginning of world war II Albert Einstein found a way to purify
Uranium and build the Atomic Bomb but it was Enrico Fermi who created a self sustaining nuclear chain reaction. The hardest problem to be solved was the production of sufficient amounts of uranium to cause one chain reaction. Then, U-235 was very hard to extract. In fact, the ratio of conversion from Uranium ore to Uranium metal is 500:1. An additional disadvantage is that the 1 part of Uranium that is refined from the ore consists of over 99% Uranium-238, which cannot be used to make an atomic bomb. To make it even harder, U-235 and U-238 are alike in their chemical makeup. No ordinary chemical extraction could separate the two isotopes. Only mechanical methods could separate U-235 from U-238. Several scientists at Columbia University succeeded in solving this problem by magnetically separating the two isotopes.

Ok, let me clear this up for all the people who are actually doing research on this stuff.
Yes, the atomic bomb was first used against Japan. The first one was dropped over Hiroshima and it's nickname was "Little Boy." The second was dropped 3 days later over Nagasaki. They both had very deadly affects. This ended the conflicts between Japan and the United States. It didn't end World War II (as most people think) because World War II was officially over at that time. Hope this actually helps some people instead of some of the lame responses I saw when I was trying to research the atomic bomb!

Yes, two atomic bombs were used during World War Two. the first one, named Fat Man, was dropped on the Japanese city Hiroshima on August 6,1994. It caused pain and agony for over 140,000 citizens at one time; melting their skin like putty, cooking their organs like chickens in an oven... alive. Causing what was known as the black rain to fall over the city. it must have been terrible.

You better belive it. It was not dropped once but twice because Japan is stupid and did not surrender. Then they finally had common sense to surrender which ended ww2. V-J Day.
