Dolphins use SONAR to bounce sound waves off of objects, so that they can "see" what is ahead of them.  Ships also use SONAR to map the ocean floor, and to locate fish.

Dolphins send of a pattern of clicks which reaches another object/animal in the water or in the ocean. The clicks bounce off of the object/animal and the dolphin then picks up the series of clicks. Then the dolphin can tell how large and how far away the object/animal is.

Dolphins send out sonar waves to see what is in front of them. By doing this they can tell how large an object is and how far away it is. After sending out the sonar waves and it hits something, it bounces back to the dolphin.

Sonar is what dolphins use to see they send a series of clicks out through the melon and measure how long it takes for the click to echo back.  From that the dolphin can tell shape, size, distance, speed, direction, density, and configuration.

Most marine dolphins have a large repertoire of sounds. These include pulsed sounds of two general types: those used for echolocation (SONAR) and those emitted in emotional states. Dolphins also emit pure tone sounds called whistles and chirps. Each individual has its own unique whistle that serves to distinguish who and where the whistle is coming from. The loudness and the duration of the whistle are also important.

People are constantly relying on the scientists and the writers of published references and textbooks as well as topic specific books for the "accepted values"of many things. It is quite ironic to find so many variations and inconsistencies among these values.

The low end ranges from 100 Hz to 8,000 Hz with three sources agreeing on a value of 1,000 Hz. The higher end of the range was more varying listing upper frequencies of 120,000 (two sources), 150,000, 164,000 and 200,000 Hz. One should seek the standard deviation of the machinery used before stating which is wrong and which is correct. The machine deals with large quantities and therefore what sounds like a big difference can be considered by scientists to be minimal.

Many reasons can be listed as to why these facts differ. As the advancements in science and machinery took place, the tools used to measure the frequencies may have changed in their sensitivity and accuracy. One also must take into consideration that all the scientists might not have been using the same type of dolphin. Variations in the location of the measurements, the size of the dolphin, the time of year, the gender, and the age of the dolphin are all variables that may have affected the results

Dolphins navigate by sonar! Dolphins use SONAR to bounce sound waves off of objects, so that they can "see" what is ahead of them.  They have eyes but the hearing is much stonger than there eyesight. Ships also use SONAR to map the ocean floor, and to locate fish.

But anyway here is the real answer. Dolphins fart. Sorry. Kidding. Here is the answer:

Dolphins send clicks. The sound waves bounce off an object and return to the dolphin. Then the dolphin determines that there is an upcoming object and the size of the object. Many other items act like the dolphin sonar. Ships can use sonar to ocean graph, and ultrasonic sensors work this way too!. Also lasers can be used the same way as a dolphin sonar.

Yes, I realize that the original question poster probably won't read this, but I thought I'd clarify, for the record. Dolphin sonar works just like artificial sonar. They use noises to bounce sound waves into their watery environment, and when the echoes return, they subconsciously calculate the direction and strength of the returned sound waves to roughly determine the location and object that the echo bounced off of. This is called echolocation, and I believe it's also used by other sea creatures like whales.

Dolphins communicate by using sonar. Dolphins have a certain system in side of them that is capable of making sonar also known as dolphin echolocation. Dolphins use sonar to bounce sound waves off of objects so they know what is ahead of them.
