Holograms are interference patterns. When light passes through these patterns it reconstructs to make a true 3 dimensional image of the object.

Silver Halide.
We make holograms by taking a beam of light from a coherent source (i.e. a laser beam) and split it into two, called the object beam and the reference beam. The object beam goes through a diverging lens (lens which spreads the light) and reflects off the object, and onto a film plate. The reference beam also shines through a diverging lens but then goes directly onto the film plate. The two beams cause an interference pattern which becomes recorded onto the film plate. The silver reacts to the light and turns black. After the exposure is over you rinse the silver halide which reacted off, then cure it so the rest doesn't react from exposure to new light. What you are seeing on the hologram is the wave front of the object is was of, making it visually identical to the object aside from color (unless it is a full color hologram)
