if you gauge your ears up to a zero gauge. how long will it take for them to shrink back to an 18 if at all possible?

I read about some girl who went up to a 7/16. She a realized she looked funny with such a big gauge so she took the jewelery out. 4 months later she only went down to a 0 gauge. 2 years past and she only went down between a 2 and 4 gauge.

They say once you go down to about a 2 gauge it's difficult for your lobes to shrink down to a smaller size.

The trick to closing large gauge piercings is to stretch them slightly and then put in smaller jewelry. Example: you have 8ga, stretch almost to a 6ga and put in 10ga rings/plugs/etc. After 2-3 months repeat process. Stretch almost to 8ga and put in 10ga. The idea is to cause enough irritation to trick the body into thinking its a new piercing. Aftercare is just like a new piercing and watch for keloids.

it is easy to let them close you just keep your earing out and it will close my ear now is almost at a 1/2 inch and when it was at zero i took it out for a day and in shrunk to a 2 or 4 gauge and i had to push a zero back through but if you just keep your earing out it will close give it time!

*shrug* A friend of mine had his ears either at 0g or 00g [cannot remember which] and they shrank almost completely within weeks.
Zoe, right now you are at a 20g or 18g. DO NOT even attempt to put a 12g in. If you do, you are taking a VERY big risk of tearing or causing a blow out in your lobes. Trust me, it ISN'T fun. Start at a 16g at the BIGGEST. From there wait at least 1-2 months between each stretch. Piercing studios do not charge much to stretch a piercing [at least not the ones here; they're only about between $5 and $10]. The cost of jewelry on the other hand, though, is a different matter. If you don't want to get it done professionally, get some first aid tape and add one revolution of tape on your earrings. Every couple of days add another revolution until you get to the next size. I realize that you may be impatient to stretch your ears, but trust me, it is better to wait and have it done properly than to jump into it and possibly do permanent damage to your ears.

I've have my ear at a 000 (7/16)for about a year and I took it out recently.  It closed up almost completely.

I'm actually thinking about going up to a 9/16 but not sure when I'll reach my own point of no return.  Anyone gone up to a 1/2 inch or larger and gone back to a closed hole.

i had regular piercing,  like an 18 gauge.  i bought sum 14 guage rings and got them thru.  DO NOT shove them thru fast.   i did mine somewhat slowly and even still they teared a bit.  i would recommend starting at a gauge a bit small,  like 14,  not 12.   then if it tears,  wait until it is healed b4 u put in the next gauge.    GOOD LUCK

ok... i was at a 16 gauge, i put a 8g in it within a week and had absolutely no problems. i am now at a 3/8". don't use any kind of rubbing alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, none of that stuff... it causes prolonged healing time which can lead to infection and scarring. wash your hands and ear with ANTIBACTERIAL SOAP, then lube up the ring or w/e you have with the soap, the SLOWLY slip it in. don't mess with it without cleaning your hands first, when using the phone, use the other ear, try not to let anything touch it (this includes cosmetic stuff). just be careful about it.

happy gauging :D

i had 18s so I bought 8 guage horns and pushed them in gradually every other day. This by far is the best method there is no pain involved. every once and a while give it a little push and by the end of the week your ear will go from a 18 to an 8....well mine did

An easy and cheap way to gauge your ears is just use one of those jelly bracelets that everyone has. Start by cutting a piece off of it and cut it so it has a spiked point on it then put it through your ears. It will take a little bit but it goes through (use a smaller size of the bracelet). then, whenever you can twist it easily, take it out then put a layer of black electrical tape on it. just repeat until you have the size you want. good luck

NO, they are reffering to a 'TAPPER' its like a spike with one end the guage side and the other side tappers into a point so that you can slide it through your ear easier.

i'mat an 8 gauge. i dont know why people rush gauging there ears.DONT! i got my ears pierced at a 16, waited 6 weeks. put a 14 in, waited 3 weeks. then kept going down to an 8. give your ears a chance to heal a little before putting a bigger gauge in. ALso, use some sort of spike that gradually gets thicker rahter that just shoving a plug through. its 50 times easier

Going from "pericing at the mall" to a 12g... YEAH! definate blow out and pain there. a percing at the mall is usually a 22, maybe a 20, and jumping to 12 would be a huge risk. and i dont think you want to have to deal with the infection and pain of a blow out.

i had 00 in both of my ears. over night they closed up to an 8. it just depends on your body. you can look at it by how fast you heal when you have a scrap on yoru knee compared to other people. also when you have a mall piercing start off with a 14. put some vaseline or some antibacterial soap on the ring and slide it through. you can keep going till around 8 or 6 and then you need tapers because the hoops start to be internally threaded.

i have a 4guage taper and a 2 and a double zero.i took both my ears from 10's to double zeros in just 5 days!!!!!now they are at 1/2 an inch and its been about 2 weeks i've had them pierced.....so good luck to u and your line

Ok I have something to say first off the right way to gauge your ears properly is to put heavy earring's in and play with them til they go to the next size on their own and so on that way the scar tissue in side the ear doesnt get to thick to heal.So just using weight will guage them or you can usa a taper or spike but can do more damage. Now on this subject of no return I know someone who had 2 1/2 inch gauges and left them out for 3 years and they went all the way back to an 8 you just have to do it right I am currently at 1/2 inch gauges in both ears and i have been working on them for about a year so I would just say do what you want you can take more time with it or do it fast and maybe cause problems but just go for it.PeAcE

don't go too fast like i did or you'll regret it. TRUST ME! i went WAY too fast. i put in safety pins then went to a 14 to 10 to 6 to 4 to 2 to 0 to 00 to 1/2" and finally to 5/8" so far. i only waited a few days in between. they prob. won't close up. if u want them to close up, don't go past 1/2" (or a 2 ga. to be on the safe side) if u take your time it'll be easier to go back due to less scar tissue. take it slow, it'll make your destiny that much sweet when u get there. i ignored it and now i'mhere for the rest of my life and i'monly 17. i know how you'll feel, i felt the same way. u think, "it'll never happen to me. not me. maybe you or that guy. but not me. i'llbe able to go back and close them up." but you won't!!

I had my ears pierced at a mall.  Size 20.  After that I bought some gauging spikes from a friend.  He said they would gauge my ears out to a 0.  He said it took him 3 days.  His ears look great.  He is now at 1/2.  So I gauged my ears from a 20 to a 0 in day.  I messed with them all day till they slid all the way in.  Im at zero in both ears.  That was about three months ago.  My ears look fine.  Feel fine.  Now Im about to go to 00gauges.

i dont know if you people post in here still or what not, but from what ive read there is a lot of ignorance. everybody has their own point of no  return. ive had a frend at quite the large gauge and her ears did what one person said, if you forceyour ears to a larger siZe then take out the jewlrry, your ears will shrink a lot faster.
my ears are currently at 1" and ui dont plan on going smaller. i think if you are going to go through the effort and pain of stretching them, only to know that you are going to take them out in a short while, whats the point, i feel that body modifications are a self expression and a stateof mind. you shouldnt let society make you stop in fear of not succeeding in the future.

To Zoe, I am an apprentice piercer. My ears are now at a mere 00g, but the trick is to rub neosporn or some other greasy anti-biotic onto the earing before you put it in, you should be able to easily put in a 10. Gauging hurts because of friction, not so much the stretching, that is one reason it is so easy to gauge a toungue, saliva acts as a lubricant, plus that, the neosporan should also help your piercing heal right, a good piecring shouldn't have much scar tissue, there are a lot of kids out there that have very bad looking gauges, mostly scar tissue, that makes it hard to gauge later, if your planning on going big, like my buddy with a 2 in. then you don't want to develop much scar tissue, I also recommend witch hazel as an anti-biotic, it is a great disinfectant and it won't turn it into a scar.

Hey there! The key is moving slowly. I just got upsized from size 6 plugs to size 4 today (woohoo... congratulations, me!) If you let your ears COMPLETELY heal around the next-smallest size to the 0, (that's about a month) and keep going down one size each month, you should heal with minimal scarring.

I pierced my ears the "Unsafe" way i found some random sewing needle and rammedit right through  and then took a 14" And put them in couple about a week later they still hurt but its not that hard to take a little pain and i went straight to 10" "Try an earrings With the Tail ends with the black bands to keep em in They Do the job" It may hurt for a while but you'll

everybody is different in the fact of healing. for most people beyond a 2 gauge is hard to heal back. others can go to a OO and be fine when they decide to take it out. if it does not close you can have surgery where they take a layer of skin from the inner walls of the hole and it will heal shut...for 250 dollars each ear. if you want to do that you can but you can do it your self. you can gauge it bigger quickly or find something to scratch it with. just make sure if you scratch it with some thing(nail filer, sandpaper) its very clean and afterwereds you have no remains of it in your ears. and thats all you have to do

Well, I got that piece of crap thing at the mall piercing, and i just started  to do the gauges to! I had an 18 gauge, of course, then of course am VERY impatient, so i put in the 12 for maybe ten minutes, then very quickly switched to a 10 gauge just to make my process faster, then ill wait a week to put in 8 gauge so on with the 6, then 4, then 2! Maybe ill go further...but its is true, t depends on how your body works, but my lobes are just fine! So if your impatient like me, get the balls to do it and go for it and shove it in. But do be careful, they take forever to heal if you rip them, i did the first time i tried! But have fun.....\m/

I went from a 20 to a 10, to a 6 then 4 in less than an 6 hours... just grin and bear it... or let it heal.. my ears are doing fine. Suggestion though, if you are gauging fast, then do it with something other than metal.. something like acrylics or glass.. they work best, less irritation.

zoe, you should definitely use a taper (one taper ranges from about 4-8 dollars) to get to a 12. if you go from a 20 to a 12 you are going to be in so much pain and you could permanently damage your earlobes. i just finished plugging my ears, they are at a 2, and it costed me about 60 dollars for everything i needed. plugging your ears really isn't all that cheap if you do it the correct way..

my ears have been at a 2 for about a week now, and i wasn't planning on closing them for at least a year. i was just wondering if anyone personally has had plugs at a 2 or 0 or even 00 for OVER a year and managed to have them close back to an 18 or 20 within time. i'm just nervous that they'll never shrink back to normal if i keep them stretched for too long..

hey you can go to a double zero gauge and it will close up but if you go past that you will break the elasticity in your ear and it  wont close back up..but some people are lucky and they do close up if there at a 1/2 or something but just be careful.. and take care of you ears with sea-salt soaks and rubbing alcohol and vitiamin E oil and you'll have happy ears for life!!!

It is usually pretty easy to get a 14 in with a regular peircing. Start out with the side of your non-dominant hand. It usually hurts a tad bit more. It is easier that way because you will know it will hurt less. But the pain is the fun part.

My goal right now is to have 4's and 6's in on the same ear. I heard it is hard to do that. But we'll see, won't we?

I think we all need to realize that everyone heals differently. Some people can stretch their ears to HUGE sizes and they will stretch back. But then some people can stretch to smaller sizes and it takes forever to heal. If you are really worried about not healing, test a few guages smaller, like 10 or 8 and see how they heal if you go back to 12 or 14. If it takes forever to heal that much, then it's possible it's going to do the same for even larger guages.

Only about 2 of of you have actualy writen proper answers that will actualy help anyone.

1) the people going "ZOE SHOVE BIGGER JEWELLRY THROUGH" are pricks. you have no idea how much damage she could have done to her ears. she needs to go up 0.8mm to 1mm at a time using a taper. stretching should NOT hurt..so saying "TAKE THE PAIN" and "don't be scared" is just stupid. you should feel some stinging or burning once the taper is 3/4 of the way through, that is all. no ripping or bleeding otherwise you have just damaged your ear for life. Its not clever to just ram jewellry through a piercing. nor will it help you to get a perfect stretch. unless you really want stretch marks or scar tissue hanging out of your ear?

2) There is no real point of no return. there are only averages. it ranges from 8mm all the way up to 16mm...maybe even more. it depends on the person and their healing rate.

All of you telling her to skip sizes are pretty stupid and obviously have no idea what you are talking about and dont tell her to just 'shove them in' becasue shes not going to get anywhere and just mess her ears up.
she needs to stretch slowly WITHOUT missing out any sizes and waiting about 4 weeks in between each stretch to avoid tearing her lobes. If she does tear her lobes then she is going to have a weak spot and if she stretches too fast that spot will tear each time.
Also if you find it difficuly to stretch to the next size then dont force it, your ear obviously isnt ready to be stretched.

hate to tell you all but it seems to me hardly any of you know what your talking about.im at 3/4 of an inch an it takes time but will go back down.the best way is to take it slow.the whole shoving it in an taking it like a man.or a strong women thing is way out of wack.If you try to put something bigger then it is supposed to go you could tear the skin which causes scar tissue.if it scars up like what happen to mine in the early process of gaging. When that happens it makes it hard to put any bigger. The best way i think is to put tape as they said above.it will help stretch it out little by little.it could be a long process but is worth it.
as i said if you go to fast your ears could be shot. then it would make it almost impossible to heal back down.

My girlfriend had 00g ears when we first started dating.  She worried what I thought and that her ears might never close up.  So, out came the tunnels for several months.  They only closed to 4g.  Now she knows she won't be wearing tiny studs in her lobes ever again.  We talked a lot about it and the future of her ears, and both agreed we liked her with large holes.  So, she stretched back to 00g . . . and beyond.  She now looks so beautiful with 3/4".  Her goal is 1" (for now, anyway.) Now I know my future wife will always have cool ears. We will share the fun of caring for and enjoying them and looking back at all the stretching, with pleasure.

if you want to go to smaller sizes just don't go over a half inch and it should close up pretty good maybe to like a 12g butt that is better than being at a half inch or if you want to stretch if you have the money go to a tattoo parler and they will use a taper which hurts less but if you dont just put some Vaseline on the earring and have a friend shove it threw grated it does hert a little more but it works but never skip a size because you can rip you ear lob

Causing it to bleed ALOT and and hurt ALOT. Then my right ear Keloid when I got to a 6. Trust me do not shuv it in, if your impatient.. go for a 14 gauge, its not as bad but theres probably a lesser chance of you ripping your ear.

When you have your ears with a standard piercing go to a 14 itll fit fine and then about 2-3 days later you can go to a 10 just use some some and water to lubricate it and stretch a little bit gradually ive been stretching for a lil over a month and im at a 4 no problems, i went from a 10 to a 4 in a day so the hole would be big enough for a 6 so i backed down to a 6 and about a week later moved up to a 4......good luck

Hey KimmY, regular piercings are 18, especially if you had them since you were 3 months old, i wouldn't believe it'd be any bigger than that. You might want to get tapered earrings because it is easier to slide them in. I jumped from 18 to 14, but that was because I used to have a pair of 18's that had a bigger part of jewelry and i would play with it slipping it into my ear and such. Basically acting as if it were a 16g.

Right now I'm at a 2g, and i bought earrings for a 0, but it's very hard for me to get them in.

i had zeros in my ear and they closed completely you just have to strech your ears correctly not try to go from a 16 to 6 and then like a 6 to 0 take your time so you dont damage your ears

Hey, Every ones ears close up at different time. It just depends on how your body reacts to what you have in you ears. I'm just tired of everybody asking will my ears close up? If you are going to do it then just do it and worry about if they will close up when you want to shrink them back down. And 2 gauge is the point of no return. I know, I am a professinal piercer. (plus I am at a 2 right now)
           Later. and Good Luck All

Umm... Yea, I had started with a 12g and I was planning to go lower (more like a 6). But I lost the spike. So now I am at normal 24 (or 22). Could I still go to a 6 or would i have to work my ear down to a 6 with like a 12 then 8 then 6? It is my lobe if that helps.

I got my ear pierced at wal-mart and that was a 18g.  At school my friend and I had, I wouldn't call it a competition, but we would try to get the hole bigger and bigger.  I stopped at 12g, and my friend moved away this year from school.  I decided to gauge my ear out for him.  I used the metal part on a paint brush.  I am now a 2g.

A first to gauge my ear I used a small sheet rock nail.  Then I used a bigger nail, and then I started using the metal parts on a model paint brushes, and that work very well.  I bought a package of about 10 to 12 and pulled the wood out of the metal peice and cut the thread off the other end. I am now a 2g.  My mom says I can't go any bigger.  I only have two years left before I can atempt to go bigger.  That one dudeis right 2g is the point of no return.

Okay some of you are right and some wrong all ears will go back to normal accept 00 gauge it all depends how healthy you are and how long you wait.My ears are at a 2 gauge and when i take them out i have o shove the tapers through again which really sucks.Give a  gauge about 1 month. The only problem is youll have the good ol cats booty look. But say you get a dermal punch you cant close it back to normal because your taking the skin away. Most piercing studios dont do punches at the studio i work in we do but you have to sign your life away. Hope this helps :(*)

i used a extender that streched from a 3mm to an 8mm in a cone shape.
im not going any further though im happy with my 8mm

Do not skip gauges when gauging up..or down ... if you want it to be healthy and heal properly....when you first get yur ear's pierced you start and an 18, or in some cases, 20 gauge, ...I went straight to 14 gauge and then never skipped gauges again- 14-12-10-and i just bought my pieces for sizes 8- 6- and 4
clean them w/ antibacterial dial soap at leaste once a day if possible...more as needed

I stretched mine from a 12 to a 2 with a taper in the matter of 15 minutes. I'm pretty sure their teared and I'm about to go up to a zero right away. Not sure what would happen if i were to let them heel but they heeled in like a week and a half and i could put cateye's in so i'm not to worried about it.

I STARTED WITH 18GAUGE 8YRS AGO AND ON THE AVERAGE HAVE JUMPED A SIZE EVERY SIX MONTH OR SO I'VE GOT THEM STRETCHED TO 5/8INCH AND GETTING READY TO GO TO 3/4. BUT I HAVE TAKEN THEM OUT AND PRACTICALLY HAD TO START ALL OVER. I STARTED DATING A GIRL WHO JUST COULDN'T STOMACH THE HUGE HOLE IN MY EAR SO I TOOK THEM OUT THE KEY TO GETTING THEM TO CLOSE UP IS #1 DON;T STRETCH TO FAST IF YOU BUST THE CARTILAGE YOUR SCREWED #2 WHEN YOU DECIDE YOU WANT THEM TO CLOSE UP TAKE THE NEXT SIZE UP  AND JAM THEM BAD BOYS THROUGH LEAVE THEM IN FRO ABOUT 6-8 HOURS AND TAKE THEM OUT LET THEM BREATH AND THEY WILL SEEM TO GET INFECTED BUT THIS IS GOOD BECAUSE IT WILL CREATE LIKE A SCAB AND I GUARANTEE FROM EXPERIENCE THEY WILL CLOSE UP SO TIGHT IT'LL BE LIKE POPPING A CHERRY JUST TO GET SON 16'S OR 14'S THREW THOSE HOLES. I DROPPED THE GIRL WHO DIDN'T LIKE THE GAUGES AND HAD TO START FROM SCRATCH. THANK GOODNESS I HAVE SAVED EVERYSIZE AND LIKE I SAID I'M AT 5/8" RIGHT NOW. NO SIZE IS THE POINT OF NO RETURN AS LONG AS YOU STRETCH SLOWLY AND ALLOW YOU BODY TO ADJUST AND DON'T TRAUMATIZE YOU EARS #1 AND MOST IMPORTANT STRETCH SLOW, I HAVE SEEN SOME PEOPLE F*@K THEIR EARS UP.

I too have a question like those before me.  So I am planning on gauging my ears, very small gauge though.  I have the normal mall pierced holes in my lobes.  What gauge is that?  It's all kind of foreign to me.  Anyway, what gauge should I start stretching with at this point?  I know that stretching too fast will screw up your lobes, I've seen it. So I wanna do it right.

i went from "mall-pierced ears", to about a 6g in 4 weeks. the absolute minium time for being able take out your original earring was 2 weeks for me, then i fit a 10 g in, kept that for about 2 more weeks, then put second 10g earing in the same hole. do that if u want gauged ears, but dont wanna wait, or buy lots of earrings. it didnt hurt that much. idk maybe i just have flexible ears

It also depends on how much you mess with your earring i have to take them out for work every day and I'm at 5/8's... after a while of taking them on and of, they start to shed skin and stay their size longer without shrinking unless like before stated, you stretch more then put in smaller jewelry or none at all... and a good way to start stretching i found and it does hurt... go to any hot topic (or whatever store) and find those really long labret spikes they work great as taper and can take you from like a 18 or 16g to like a decent 8 or 6 or start with the labret bar itself (usually 14g), and THEN the long spike...

in my expeirce*ence the best way i think if you are a first timer is to take a warm bath, (if your the passing out type make sure you have someone with you) but lay your head under the water for a bit then shove your plug in, i went from an 18 to 10g this way. It's suppose to help from your ears bleeding and such, like putting ice will do, plus a nice warm bath will relax your nerves a bit.

Yeah, if you use tape or even safety pins and paper clips, you can slowly work up and save dinero.  I started with normal piercings, but the holes closed; I repierced them with large safety pins.  I was still wearing normal earrings then, and I was around a sixteen gauge.  I found some plastic-coated paper clips and put them in, and moved up to about a fourteen gauge.  Those are great to start gauging with, by the by, because they don't get infected.  Period.  After that, I bought a ten gauge pair and those went in okay (of course, I'd been sticking random things through the holes all week, and they were a bit torn).  Now it's about two months later or so and I just bought a pair of six gauge, which went in great.  I think it might get easier after the initial jump.  =)  Just use small stuff, if you're starting out...you'd be surprised the number of things that work, like regular hardware nails (which, of course, must be oil-free and clean and suchlike so that you don't get infected).

well all of this is true, everyones body is diffrent so that means your ears are all not going to "close" the same way...i went from a 22mm (7/8) down to a 12.2mm (1/2) in 2 days then from there i went to a 8.25mm (0g). but no im back at 19.30mm (3/4) so it all depends on your body and how you help your ears close.BUT...they do say after 25mm (1") your ears will not close all the way NO MATTER WHAT!!! so if your trying to close your holes just take out your gauges buy some vit.E oil and always rub that into your ears it will keep them healthy and help them close!!

I never had a blow out, or any tearing at all. All I can tell you is that you need to do what you feel is right for your own body, If the pain is to much then try something smaller, if it was to easy go bigger, if you like.

i have 9/16ths in both ears right now and a 10 gauge in my cartalage.

ive met them close a bunch of times, you just need to take them out and then re strech them, then take them out, and so on and so on. it also depends on the person, it all varies.

and to put the ear ring in, try putting some vasaline on your ear and the gauge and shove it in, it will hurt and bleed(thats how they normally react at first unless you wore long dangally earrings for a long period of time)

if you still cant take the paint use the electrical tape trick, just roll a peice of tape on the earring and shove it in, and repeat everyday. before you know it, youll be able to get your gauges in!

i hope i answered some of your questions, if you have any more you can contact me though aim at BluEyedRXBandit

One big hint for guys wanting to strech your ears.
I was at a four and went to 00 by going in the steam room at the gym.
It hurts after you get out of there but after about five mintues in there they should slip in very easy.
if that doesn't work right for you try putting then in as much as you can they put something on the back so that they won't come out, then after you sleep try putting them in father each day that is what I did when I was going to 6 from 16g, it took me 3 days to do each.

Im at 00g in both ears now. This is the second time im stretching my ears out. The last time i stopped at 0g and I went back to a 14g in about 2 months no problem. It all really depends on how your ears are, do you have an attached lobe or a dissattached lobe. It also depends on how well your ears heal. It's different for everyone, but ears will shrink back to normal as long as you don't go past 00g.

hey zoe. no fear, i just pierced my ears about a year ago. they werent done with a gun tho..it was done with the earrings. its all about the earrings u normally wear. like if u wear the usually..needle-like sized earrings, they'll do you no good. i had thick studs so they helped. im now on a 14 gauge in my left ear. also tip, use neosporin, its helps heal faster, and helps put the earrin in easier.

^_^ good luck!

u guys are all right in all ways. everyones is different i took mine from an 18 to an 8 in like four or five days. then i went from an 8 to a 2 in two days now I'm at a 2/5 and my brothers is the same, but he went to jail for like 2 weeks and when he came out his ear was at an 8 again, now when i went for a month and a half i only went down one size everyone is different but if you really want it to heal painlessly take out your gauge and leave it alone it will eventually heal, or if you want it healed fast gauge it a size bigger then what u got then take the stick out hold a towel on it until it stops bleeding then leave it alone it'll scab up and eventually heal, it does leave a weird looking hole in all cases I've seen either way the hole looks different and will always be a little stretchy but thats all i got to say peace out all

Umm. When I was 6 I went to the mall and got my ears pierced with a gun. Just recently i decided I wanted to gauge them. I had a 16, then a 14, and now a 12. I wanna put a 10 in, but if I take them out will they close up? I probably won't want huge holes in my ears when I'm like... 30.

i used to pierce ears for a company in a mall and i went to a course. if ya get it done at Arden's they use like 16g if ya get it done at Claire's they use 20-18g only go from one size to another and wait at least a week or two in between (eg.16g-14g) it will hurt less and get the job done quicker i'm at 10g and it only took 5 months and it is still getting bigger

i don't know about stuff closing up but i went from have nothing directly to a 2 gauge. i will probably stretch to a 0 or 00 (which is larger?) they seemed fine. it's kinda funny because they are almost loose. i can push them out sometimes from the front through the back without even realizing it. if i want to take them out down the road i'massuming the body will enact it's own healing process and they will close somewhat. if not i guess i'lljust have to keep wearing earrings. not the worst thing in the world

first off, if you stretch out your ears you should not jump gauges, if you have healed holes you can start with a taper and get to 14g after that you shouldnt need tapers just pull on your jewelry and when its healed you will be able to fit the next gauge, thats how i did it and im at 00g (and i can almost pull these flared plugs out)  if you use tapers your holes will be able to shrink, but if you wear heavy hanging jewelry your holes are less likely to shrink

ok heres the deal. i got both of my ears done at a 14g, sadly due to my lack of patience i got both ears down to 7/16ths  within one month. not only is this extremely painful but it is also extreamly dangerous. not only are you tearing your lobe by going up each gauge so quickly, you are also opening your ears up to a world of infections.  big ears are something that requires dedication.now i will address the issues of shrinking back. guaging your ears is something that will stay with your for the rest of your life. everyones body is different so when stretching your ears you must accept the risk of the hole never closing even if you only  do go down to about a 2g.

I was at 00 for about 4 months and when I was at cheer camp [wouldn't expect a cheerleader to have gauges, but I did, and it grossed the others out, it was hilarious] anyways, it got ripped out while catching our flyer during a stunt. I lost the gauge in the grass and when I got home, I could no longer fit anything close to 00 in the hole. I ended up putting my size 6 plug back in. So yeah, Im not sure if 2 really is the "point of no return" cause my 00 went down to a 6 in less than a day.

don't try to stretch too fast.  anyone who tells you do just bear the pain of going up 2 or more sizes is stupid.  i had mine pierced at the mall (18g), and i was able to put in a 14g after a month with no problems.  you should take it nice and easy, and go up a size about every one/two weeks.  just see how your body responds and take it from there.

cowgod, if you wrap 1-4 layers of tape around you earing daily, it will be a lot cheaper.  also if you use vitamin e and rub it all over the earing, it will go in a lot easier.
P.s. don't use electrical tape, if you do your body heat will warm up the tape and melt the adhesive.  Then the black stuff winds us all over your neck.  used like scotch tape

i started with an 18ga. then i started utting forgein objects in my lobes. like paper clips. that, was like...16ga and then i hopped down to a 10. yeah, just like that. all it took was a friend who had some good strength. we stood in her bathroom and POP! went the weasle. now im at 2's and i dont plan on getting bigger. it was honestly really easy to get where i am. it was realyl easy stratching my ears until i got to twos.

word of advice, use tapered stuff. my 10s were not tapered. everything else afterwards, was. i even made my own tapers. like comb ends and stuff.

what i did was take bigger tapers and only slide it in so much and have it in for like 5 mintues then stick the actual plug or item of the size you want and switch it really fast.

as for my ears now, i take it out for like a minute, annd my 2's are already kinda hard to put it. my ears close up really fast. i estimate if i took them out for a day, i'd be back to like a 8 or 10 by the end of the day.

butttt. im having one problem. my right ear has been itching like crazy and i found two huge lumps in em. i figured it was from the puss n crap so i cleaned it with peircing solution stuff.

any idea whats causing this?

okay, i started with a 14 went to an 8 went to a 4 then to a 0. its not too bad if you just give it time. my friend the other week went from a 18 to an 8 in like 5 minutes. just go buy a taper and stretch it, not so bad. but once you get to the lower gauges, you probably shouldn't skip any sizes. it hurts like a butt.

When you are just starting out stretching, this SUCKS to hear... but here goes: You can NOT skip gauges.  It might work now but when you start getting into fractions (2ga to 0ga is the first jump in fractions) it'll start to catch up to you.  If your size wont go in smoothly with lubricant, then it is not your size.  Jumping sizes causes unneccesary stress to your lobes (the pressure of which will create tears) and cause your ear to bleed, blow out, and, worst of all, scar up.  If you plan on going big, scars are a problem.  They don't stretch nicely like the fatty tissue of your lobe.  If you plan on going big (I'm at 1 and 1/4 ga right now), you need to do it slowly.  It's taken me two years.  If you don't think it's worth it to wait that long, then you probably won't have your gauges in for long anyway, so don't even bother stretching.  The surgery is expensive ($4,000) and only has a 40% chance of giving your lobes a "normal" appearance.  Think before you start stretching.... and for God's sake take it slow or you'll reach a point, probably between 000ga and 1/2ga, when the scar tissue that you've created will not stretch any more.

-Kirk

I just kept adding more and more earrings in until what i have now. i dont suggest this to anyone, but it really dosent matter to me. but when you do this your whole isnt a perfect circle, its kind of distorted looking. i suggest investing in some $10 tapers. in the end you'll understand why

Alright.
i pierced my own ears with a 14 gauge needle.
and a week later i streched them to a six gauge.
and a week and a half later i stretched them to zero.
from zero i went to 9/16ths in another two weeks
then 1 week l;ater i went to 5/8s.
and now two weeks after that im at 1 inch.
so its pretty much just how comfortable your body feels

I found a lovely little friend in bakeable clay.  I started at a 20g and put in more earings until i was up to 4 in each hole, then i could make the clay small enough to fit through.  That was 4 months ago and i'm at a 8g now and that was with a long time in between even trying.  The great thing about clay is that you can make them any size in between gauges, and you can also get cool colors and make sweet looking plugs/earings/whatever for a very low price.

I had my ears pierced when I was around 7, and I fit a 12g in no problem, didn't hurt at all, then progressed to 6g, and had to let them close up for a job, damn them, and they shrunk back to an 18g, stretched back to6g then progressed on to 00g and had to take them out for another job, if you are young, don't get jobs at places that work with food, and they've closed up just fine now. I'm about a 14g, but even those hold 18g CBR and look normal. So listen to you ears, if they hurt, I suggest you stop, and the best way to stretch is tapers, I suggest Hot Topic, the only thing that store is good for, to buy tapers, or your local piercing specialist.

I have a great trick for you people. Paperclips are normally around a 16 gauge. Put in a paperclip one night, then in the morning add another. Paperclips don't look bad as earings and is a (in my opinion) great way to stretch your ears. I had a friend at 20 today. I got a paperclip in, then I added a 20 or 18 stud, dont remember on top of that. 10 minutes later when we took them out the holes were stretched but started to shrink, so we just slid in the 14's. Good way to jump gauges. Just add something small, add another a while later, probably more, then remove fast and put the other one in before it shrinks.

I  thought when I had 14 gauge hoops in I wanted to stick stuff through my ears. So I just went up with what ever I had. Later I got to a 2 gauge and thought I looked funny so I took them out. aAbout two days later they shrunk and you couldnt see through them but I could still stick an 8 gauge in. now I went to a two and am trying to go to a 0gauge. So strech away.

anyone that says there is a specified point of no return is full of crap, i know people who where at 1/2in and in a matter of weeks they were back to a 2 and then 2 weeks later down to a 4, everyone is different, if you are just beginning to gauge your ears take it slow, dont skip gauges and go to a GNC or some other health store and buy vitamin E oil, it helps your skin maintain elasticity so your ears will shrink faster if you decide you want to down gauge, and lubricates when pushing new plugs through. which means less pain

Hey, zoe, here's a nice little story for you:
I got my ears pierced at the mall a few years ago. About 6 months ago, I decided to stretch my ears to a larger gauge.
I tried to fit my friend's 16 in, and my ear hole bled. A damn 16. imagine what a 12 would have done?
I went out and bought 18-4 gauges, and stuck the 18s in. I left them in for a week, and tried the 16s. they went in, and then the next day i put in 14s, and the next day the 12s. By this time they were hurting, so I left them in for a week.
I got impatient and skipped 10 and went to and 8. I took them out for cleaning the next day, and was amazed at how much the ear lobe can bleed.
Now i'mup to a 4, and I tried shrinking (out of curiosity) and couldn't go smaller than 8. If I were you, I would be patient.

i didnt have earings in my ear for like, a year, and i out of no where i wanted gauges, so i bout a gauging kit with three sizes for both ears, 14, 12, and 10 gauge plugs.  i put them all in within a week, and its a little painful, but im fine.  now i just find stuff around the house and id say im at about a two.  i just dont have the money for real plugs. i went from like a 10 to a two, and it hurt for like three days, but if you arent a sissy, do it, its badass.

I just want to say that you can put whatever size you want in..and it's going to hurt but you have to do it...and skip sizes don't be dumb and waste your money on dumb stuff like going from a 20 to 18.... i went from a 20 to a 14 then to a 7 now i am going to go bigger...so just shove them in...get your friends to do it...it hurts less because they do it faster!

People That Need Help With Gauging
peole say that you can't shrink after sertain sizes but i just had both my ears to 5'8s 2 sizes bigger then half inch 2 sizes lower then a inch and i just took one ear out cus it got peirced to low andi  didn't want blow out blow out is when your ear lobe ripps so when you first pierce your ear make sure you pierce it perfect and not low or you will have to start over and i was at 5'8s and my gauged do 0 already in bout 5 hours showers really help shrinking gauges also, but skipping sizes are normal bleeding and getting crustys are normal and if its really sore it will go away bout a day or 2 so don't worry and you can jump sizes its normal it will hrut yes i jump from 2 to 7'16s and yes it hurt like hell but it was alot faster way to get big holes in my ears,i'vealways liked the way they look well theres abunch of anser read it if u need help.

I have done some research in the past week about my gauging. It reads that once you get to about 2-0 that is the point of no return. It depends on how your body reacts to it mostly. I just started to gauge my ears. Its best to go one size per week, If you want fast results.

k listen you cant say if you leave them out they will grow back in fine.  you cant say if you go past a certain point it wont grow back.  it is all on the way your body reacts to it.  some may never grow back after 8 gauge, some can go to a inch and it grows back fast.   it all depends on the person.   i way to help is actually to go up a little bit and that way u make the microteres and then pull the earing out and it will usually shrink down no guarantees.  there is no way to guarantee it will shrink.

Ok i peirced my ear with a safty pin which is a 16 gauge. (one of the bigger ones) and right after i peirced it i put a 14 gauge tongue ring in it. the next 2 days i went from a 14 to a 10. no sign of tearing. in 5 weeks i had a 0 gauge and blood started gushing out of my ear when i put the 0 in there. So yeah dont make the mistake i did and strech your ear very fast. but i do love my new 0 gauge earring. i have only had it for like almost 2 days but i had the 2 gauge in for 2 days :)

I stretched two holes on each of my ears. My second hole I stretched up to a 0, while the first one was at 00. I realized I didn't like the way it looked, so I put smaller jewlery in the second hole. It's been almost 7 months, and although the hole has shrunk quite a bit, while I'm wearing 18 gauge jewlery, it slips to the bottom of the hole. I'm worried it will never close up to 18 gauge.. but we'll have to see!

And recently I decided that I didn't like the look of my 00 gauge first hole piercing, so I put in 0 gauge tapers. I'm hoping it will shrink down.. if not, I'm screwed!

A couple months ago I was at a 00g. I kept those in for about 2 months, and then decided to take them out for prom and graduation and all that bs.  They closed down to an 18g after 2 weeks or a little less.  It really just depends on your body and how it reacts to the stretching, also on how long you keep the size in for, and when gauging down, always keep jewelry in the hole, just keep going down in gauge.

To everyone getting their first ear piercing.
Just skip the lower gauges and the Mall Visit. Get at least a 10g right off the start at a piercing studio. Buy the jewelry off of Ebay and make sure its surgical steel. Save a few bucks and skip quite a bit of stretching.

To the people that cannot get a gauge in their ear, the best way to do it is to just take the pain and force it through. Or use something tapered like a nail or maybe a golf tee. Just be sure to sterilize what your using first.

for the first stretch use a lubed toothpick, then shove a 12-10 gage through, lube everything up with either vasoline or neosporine, after that you will know how your body is, for me the first few stretchings i did 2 sizes at a time, once i got down to about 4 gage i had to do it 1 at a time.  now that im down to 3/4 of inch im doing it slow. its all about how your body heals, listen to it!

I just pierced my ears to 14g, i want to skip gauges to a 10g.  How long do i have to wait exactly before i can start?  The piercer said to wait 2 and 1/2 months, but i dont really want to.  Would it hurt to start stretching early?

And another thing. I would highly suggest you go into the nearest piercing specialized shop to get some ointment for your ears as you gauge up.

Might I suggest ordering some stretching oils at: http://onetribe.nu

Also, make sure you massage your ear lobes frequently as to create circulation to increase healing time.

And if at anytime you experience any blow-out; it is a good idea to take out your jewelry or down size immediately! Blow out is nearly impossible to get rid of. Once your lobe is healed try stretching again, it may be a little easier this time. Just don't damage your ears!

Also, take it slow. You're not in a hurry - you are probably young and have several years ahead of you to stretch your lobes. The faster you go the more chances are you're going to seriously damage or ruin your ears. They'll either tear, you'll get keloids, you'll have significant scar tissue (they won't be attractive at all), infection may develop, or they'll start stretching awkwardly.

I am 3/4 inch and it took 2 years and they're perfect...so take your time.

i have one of my ears at 5/8ths and my right one at half inch. i cant seem to stretch my right one at all anymore cause i was dumb and stretched it too fast. ive been healing it for over a month and it was fine but now it just doesn't go anymore. im now thinking of getting my ear scalpeled. moral of the story, take your time or you'll regret it. and if your scared its not going to heal back up, then dont do it. everyone is different. just cause your friends ear shrunk back up doesn't mean yours will.

I had 18-20 gauge and I shoved a 12 in my ear(without a taper).  I eventually want to go to a 6 or 8 but I'm worried it won't close back up.  I'm also worried about the 12 getting infected because I just shoved the barbell in(without a taper).  I had/have no idea what I'm doing so if someone could give me some advice that would be great.

You weaklings! I hat post in my ear gauged to a ten, the next week i went from 10 to 4, on the bus, it was bumpy. Anyways, I took tjem out and they closed up the next day. I then repeirced with a 14, went up to an 8, then i put a guitar jack through it, like a 2, in took that out and went back to 8, and today i put christmas lights in, i think they are 4. For the most part im saying dont do anything that i wouldnt do, bad advice. Go slow with it and clean them every once and a while, im fine tho.

i think you are all stupid. everyone is different. you cant just expect to stretch your ears fast. it doesnt work that way. take your time.... and keep it clean... and you will do fine. it should probably take almost a year to get to 00 or 7/16 if you do it responsibly. so dont rush... just enjoy your piercings.

NO NOT FORCE AN EARRING! Use a TAPER! Last night I tapered from a 14g (what they were pierced at) to a 6g in 1 1/2 hours... hurt bad but worked out fine no tearing.

Hey, Zoe, if I were you, I'd probably go up to about a 14 or so, then to a 10. Once you get to 10, only go up one step at a time, or you'll be asking for trouble. To KimmY, you're probably at an 20 if you pierced them at the mall, or an 18 if you pierced them at a parlor, so the earrings you bought are at least 2 sizes to big.

I started with the regular 18 gauge earrings and slowly went from 16 and to a 14. Finally i got a taper and within an hour (shower first and then lube it up) i was at a gauge 4. I know its not safe in case you get a blowout but mine have been perfectly fine. There was a tiny bit of blood but relatively no pain. Id say go for the taper if you don't want to wait 2 months between sizes!

Alright, about the girl with the 12 that won't go through, buy some "equate." it's just like neosporin. lube up the horseshoe, and slowly push it through. the equate acts as a 'butter on a stuck ring' type deal, and it will stop infection at the same time. hope that helps. :) if not, then i'd try doing a 14 or a 16 first.

i'm planning on taking my zeros out and letting them close also, so thanks for the advice guys!

Aimee E, I guess everyones different.  I had my ears peirced for a month and then put a 14 through then went to a 12 in one ear and a 10 in the other.  some are harder to stretch.  After that I went to an 8 and then the next day a 6. you can go as fast as you want but I would say your only at risk of tearing your ears once you get to about a 2 or so, then wait a few weeks to make the next stretch but at the smaller sizes wait a few days or a week.  and only skip a few steps at the start. after that its a bit differnt.

Hey, my ears are at 11/16", and I am going to 3/4". Gauging your ears out is easy, and it looks awesome. When I take my jewelry out, the hole isnt even that big, is still looks "normal". I think it is awesome, and I would reccomend it to ANYONE!

PS - 2 Gauge is the "point of no return" say the books, but in my opinion, 7/16"-1/2" is, they would definitely grow back at that size, I believe.

tape isnt the smartest thing, my boyfriend is a license tatto artist & piercer he says he gets people in his show all the time whos ears got infected from the tape. theres so many other things u can use as tappers also but morley when you get to the bigger gauges like pen caps, sharpie caps....just find an object that looks similar to the gauge size your stretching and measure it to see if it works. Its so in expensive & it got me from a 20 to a 00 in 2 months and my ears healed perfectly

Hey Zoe. I was just wondering what you ended up doing. Well, i've had my ears pierced...at the the regular 18gauge since i was a baby, and just last week i bought a 14G and pushed it in.  I suggest you do that instead of trying a 12G right away. The more gradual you go, the better it'll turn out.

oh and i had the same question as CowGod. what's this tape deal about? and has anybody who has 2 piercings in each ear lobe tried gauging...that's what i am tryin to do and wanna know if anyone's done it...thanks.

If you use a taper and wait at least a month after getting your ears pierced with a standard, 18g needle, then it would be safe to taper from there to about an 8, but i wouldn't recommend anything else.  It's also not smart to gauge up right after getting your ears pierced, that's where a majority of people experience tearing.  I've also heard people talking about stretching from 8g to 6g to 4g in a week, that's something that wouldn't be very bad in terms of fast g'n but I would let them heal before trying to go to a 2 and so on because they increase in alot bigger increments from there on.

eeek! don't shove it through fast, and... not dry either. find some neosporin or vitamin e oil, put it over the jewlery, and slide it in slowly, so that you don't tear. that hurts, zoe!

and go for maybe a 14 gauge to start with hun, otherwise it'd hurt too much.
I've two sets of 00s, and my best advice is to go slowly, and be careful.

If you want to gauge your ears... DO IT SLOWLY!!! I've had my ears pierced since I was 13 months old and wore a lot of dangly, heavy earrings. Because of that, I was able to start gauging at a 14. After that, I took it one size at a time, letting my ears heal completely before moving up. I am now at a 2g and I don't think I want to go any bigger, since I have my lobes pierced twice and going any bigger wouldn't look good.

If you do it correctly and don't tear your ears, you will have better chances of them shrinking when you are ready for them to go back to normal (which you most likely will).

As for how to move up to the next size... a taper works well, but if you want to do the tape method, make sure you use medical tape.

GOOD LUCK!!

I started at a ten in both of my ears. I waited about a month in one of them and continued to stretch that one to a four by just putting it in slowly until it finally was in the entire way through. I let that sit in my ear over night an my ear adjusted. With my other ear I put in a 10g and then about an hour later after putting in the ten i put in my other 4. It hurt a lot but again after waiting about a day my ear adjusted. Now in my left ear (that I put the fours in about a month later) I put a pen through it to stretch it to 0. That hurt a lot more then putting in the fours but it still did not hurt that much. Nothing has torne at all. Its all a matter of how much pain tolerance you have and how your ears react to this type of thing. Everyone is diff.

All I have to say is just do it gradgually wait for your current gage to stop hurting after you put it in (if you can touch it and it hurts its too early). And just repeat that step from every gage. Thats what I did. and im at a 2 soon to be 0.

word of the wise: NEVER get your ear peirced at claire'sor whatever. the people have no training, the pericings usually come out crooked, and the solution they give you is crap. go to a professional who uses a hollow needle of some sort. those type of people have been through years of training to peirce ears for a living. obviously they'll know what they're doing.

finally, if say you stretch to like a 00 and then unstreatch it back to a 18 and then back again, it's unlikely that it will colse up a second time. my friend streatched hers to a 0 three times, and now it's permenantly a 0.

to CowGod: TAPER not tape. it's acrylic and it's like the "talons" or the "horns" i described in above comment except it's cheaper and straight.

I'm at a 1/2 inch right now. Pretty much Zoe, just put some neosporin on them things and jam them through as hard as you can. The longer and slower you take to put them in, the more its going to hurt. Its not as painful as people say it is though. It hurts just a little bit for a few seconds, and then it wears off. I went from a 10g to a 2g in one sitting, using no lubrication and just shoving it through. Trust me. Not that painful.

gauging shouldnt be a painful experience. theres all sorts of tapers and gadgets you buy now when approaching larger gauges. you need to take some sort of significant amount of time between guages, but this doesnt constitute "1-2 monthes" between gauges like one person said. thats ridiculous. i have 4s and I had my ears pierced at the mall 2 monthes ago. probably have 0s in by the end of the week.

But the same time, its really important to be careful so exercise caution.

gauging is a very simple process.. but a slow one if done properly.. i started with at 18 (pierced at the mall).. i would recommed going to a real piercer though...  move up on size at a time.. never jump sizes... you will cause scarring and keloids.. not cool...   if you stretch one gauge at a time.. and wait a month or so in between sizes, come time when you want them to shrink back down a bit, it will happen... if you've created scar tissue, it will never shrink down right...  but again... all of this depends on elasticity of the skin.. if you are someone who is prone to stretch marks on your body, your piercings will likely never shrink down like you may want them too in the future...
think wisely as you do everything.... dont go for the quick fix... quick fixes will be painful and cause more problems than its worth...  im at 0g now.. moving up to a 00g when i get my jewerly in a few days...   do it slow... there will be little to no pain.. and the resluts are way better...

It doesn't hurt at all (for me). but i cant stop producing a lot of pus. i have a question though. what is the earrings that you're able to have a tunnel? and what is the ACTUAL point of no return?

to go up progressivly get larger plugs you have to take out the old one and massage your ear for about 5-10mins then put the new one in wait a week or tow and keep reapeating

if you're having trouble putting a plug in, try using pinchers. like an upside down "U" if you get the ones with the pointed edges it makes it easier for them to go in.

and I have mine stretched to 00's and if I leave them out for about 2 days I'll be lucky if I can fit a 2 into them as well.

so they do close up, but usually the bigger the size, the longer it takes, so just give it time.

I started out with a 14 gauger and went from there to a 10 just by shoving them through and not taking forever to do it if your wanting to stretch your ears out then dont waste your money on bye every gauge between what your at now and what you want to be at just skip every two or three gauges and bare the pain i am now at a 6 in my ears and on my way to 1/2 inch

you cant just shove a 14g shaft into an 18g piercing, its painfull, and its damaging, you could have a blowout as well, and that takes surgery to fix. if your earlobe piercings are bleeding, that is not a good sign, and you need to back off and let them heal. I have an 18g piercing right now and wanting to put a 14g shaft in, i realized how hard it is when i actually tried it, and i will be ordering a taper to gradually stretch my ear out. Shoving that shaft in is very risky and not worth the consequences, as much as i want to get mine in, which is a lot, i still have to take time and stretch it until im able to get it in.

Well, Depends on how long you have had ur 10g in and having trouble getting an 8g in. When I g' my ears I leave one size in for about 2-3 days then step down to what ever. If your having trouble you might want to wait a few more days to put in the bigger gauge. If your still having trouble getting in the next size bigger gauge, JUST FORCE IT IN! Its going to hurt a little but you wont rip your ear lobe trust me, just take it slow and use a little lubrication. LOL! ANYTHING "NOT" water based.

don't use the tape thing around your earrings. I tried that and the tape got stuck in my ears because of the residue the tape created on it. the earring came out but the tape didn't. it was really hard getting it out, and now I'm just using earrings. its better to go for using just tapers or earrings, even if its expensive, since its your body and all and its pretty bad walking around with red bleeding ears.

OK honestly,I'm 12 and i have 00s in both ears. I went from a 20 which is like mall to a 4. In both ears i did that. Nothing happened. Everyones body is different. Maybe my 00s will never close up. Really idc. If I were to leave my 00s in for say another 5 years or so. Then it will probably never close up. If you want to gauge from say a 18 to a 2 or any gauge anytime you gauge, first put water than hand soap on the earring you are going to gauge with. It will slip right through. Gauging isn't a joke it hurts so if you go to a 0 or somewhere then decide you don't want it, that sucks for you because it will always hurt.

Taper.. not tape. Tapering is the most effective way to stretch your ears with minimal stress. To taper your lobes, you first need to procure a taper (a metal or acrylic device that tapers from your ending gauge down to your starting gauge - for example, the large end would be a 10 gauge & the small end would be around a 12 gauge). Once you have the taper, lube it up with some water-based lubricant such as KY Jelly and slide it through your ear in one fluid motion. When you get to the end of the taper, butt your jewelry up against the end of the taper so that it looks like an extension of the taper, and push the taper the rest of the way through with the jewelry. This entire process should not take more than a few minutes at longest, and is usually just a few seconds.

Hey. Anyone who wants to gage their ears should start out with 16g then down by 2's. Waiting is the best way to do it don't rush it. I am now at 3/4" and at times I rushed it and it ended up hurting alot. So everyone should take their time with it and do it right by stretching by the next size up (16, 14, 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, 0, 00, 7/16, 5/8, 11/16, 3/4, 13/16....and so on)

Closing a gauged ear depends on how long you've had it. I had 00g's for 4 years and decided to take them out. The one ear closed down to a 4g within a month, while the other still remains at a 0g. During the process of gauging, if you force an earring in and it tears the ring around the hole, it is less likely to close up. This is what happened with my one ear.

just a little pointer, when your gauging you should take the gauge out every day. at first you should most likely take them out for about 15 minutes or so. and gradually move up in time. this is so your lobes stay healthy and you get the blood to them and junk. if you do this with your gauges you have a better chance of going down, cause your lobes will be healthy and thick not worn and thin. good luck

The real answer to the original post: There is no "point of no return". It all depends on how you started. If you jumped sizes and caused the skin to tear (even microscopicly) then scar tissue forms. Scar tissue has a much harder time shrinking back to normal size because it has less turgor (elasticity) than skin does. So if you guaged up one size every 2-3 months like you're supposed to then your skin should have no problem shrinking back. Skin doesn't permanently stretch out unless you're about 70 years old. Then yes, sadly there is no return if you want it. I'm a medical professional specializing in skin/wound treatment. I have much experience with body art and have my own ears gauged. Take it from me. Good Luck.

i started at 20g which i'dhad for years before i shoved some 18g in. i just put some 10g in and whoever said to put them in fast was right because going slow makes it more likely to rip. it'll hurt for about a day but you just gotta tough it out. also if your plan on moving up a size make sure to get tapered rings, ur not just gonna shove a bigger plug in there, that'll rip your ear for sure.

I have 6's in my ears but I need to know what I should do to get to 0's because my left ear has been pierced for about 3 years and my right ear has been pierced for about 3 months, and how long will it take to heel up? (not talking about taking them out) just till they dont hert as much any more, and one more thing, should I gage them with that spike thing straight up or just gradually?

i had regularly pierced ears (about an 18) and i put in 8g tapers right away and got down to 4g's in about a week and a half.  just be smart and disinfect all earing before you put them in and be sure to clean them regularly, especially for the first few days or so.  and tapers generally work best for stretching.  good luck.

You have to be careful when you gauge your ears, use plastic stretchers, they work very well. I got my ears pierced directly to 12 gauge and they still can close up completely. I have them at 4's right now. The most important thing is that you do not tear your ears, it causes permanent damage as well as a possible infection. Lubricants can also help

Alright, I know there's a lot of misinformation out there about stretching. But here's the deal: it's true that everybody's body is different. It is usually accepted that once you reach a 0ga, the tissue in your lobes can drastically change into a form that is much less malleable and therefore have less of a chance of closing. Also, when you're reaching the larger gauges of 4 and up, you DO need to wait at least a month between stretching. Trust me, blowouts and tears are NOT fun. The best way to get something to close up is remove all jewelry and massage your lobes with vitamin e, jojoba oil, or anything of the sort daily to maintain elasticity and improve blood flow. Happy stretching!

I was at 9/16" for about 3 months, took them out and went all the way down to an 8. Then stretched them all the way up to 5/8", and now they will hardly close. I think once you pass 1/2", it takes quite some time to close.

okay,

aslong as you people dont pass 1.5g (1 inch and a half) your ears with close up.
i went from an 18 to an 8 then to  four. yes it hurts but your ear WILL NOT TEAR.

who ever wrote that your ear can blow out from going to an 18 to a 12 is wrong. i waited 2 weeks before i stated doing mine.

Really, it depends on the person.  I, like many other people who answered here, are fast healers and our ears shrink down quickly, but other people seem to never shrink back.  I think it partly depends on age too.  I can't forsee my ears growing closed as quickly 50 years from now, because the body heals less at an older age.

Okay Im At 1" right now.
If You Go Over An Inch.
It "WILL" never grow back.
But For anyone who is wanting to down size.
I perfer taking your plugs out & just cutting
with a razor blade in your hole.
get it raw.
it will heal back.

but you will have problems if your ear is blown out.

i went from an 18g to a 14g.
it does hurt a little
and your ears feel hot after wards
but its not that bad

the only bad part is all the puss.
i don't treat my ears at all and they
end up healing just fine.

I'm at a 6g right now, my final size is
going to be a 2g.

but watch out.
as you get bigger, they hurt a lot more.
and they bleed.
but if you have a high pain tolerance
you should be fine.

wtf. some of you people give extremely retarded advice. i have my ears stretched to 5/8s. DO NOT I REPEAT DO NOT RUSH THE EAR STRETCHING PROCESSS! unless you would like your ear to blow out*look it up*. If your at an 18g, the average "mall piercing size" DO NOT force the 12g in "as fast as you can" that will only cause pain, and who knows you might even rip your ear. Follow the stretching chart. If your an 18, dont get a 12, get the next size down from an 18 which is a 16. And about the ear closing up issue.. actually there IS NO universal easy close size. ITS A PERSONAL HEALING PROCESS. For some people it takes a few days, for some people months. If your so worried about your ears not closing up, my best advice would be to not stretch at all. Dont chance it if you dont want a perminate thing.

Hey,
I had my ears 'pierced at the mall' when i was about seven. I'm not eighteen and want to stretch my ears big. I can't stand the pain or a taper. It's hurting more than my septum, lip and all my tattoos ever have. Do you know if it's possible to get a hole pierced that's bigger than 16g?

I've just recently begun stretching my ears, and I'm currently at a 12g.  My goal is probably to get down to a 0g.  DO NOT under any circumstances skip more than 1 gauge at a time.  Even WITH a taper.  I went directly from an 18g to a 12g, and it didn't hurt, just a bit of burning, but it DID start to bleed.  If your ear starts bleeding, you have gone too fast.  You need to take out the jewelry and go backward one gauge immediately, or you risk tears, or blowouts.  I went backward to a 14g, waited, then moved back up to the 12g.  The best kinds of jewelry to use for the actual stretching are tapers or pinchers, not plugs.  You want something with a gradual change in thickness, the more gradual the change, the better.  Use a lubricant such as KY Jelly or just some liquid soap to slide the taper or pincher in.  If you feel any kind of pain, stop and wait to see how far you're in.  If you're pretty near the end, you could finish, but if you're in the middle or farther back, you should go down a size.  The best kinds of jewely materials for stretching are glass, metal, or organics such as stone.  Metals have a tendency to get a smell or "ear cheese" over time though.  NEVER use acrylic jewelry.  There's medical grade plastic or teflon jewelry that's fine, but acrylic is VERY dangerous.  Over time, it releases hazardous materials into your ear, and can cause irritations and/or infections.  You should give your fresh stretching soaks in a salt water solution daily, several times a day.  Massaging in the shower with the heat and steam also helps along the healing process.

Despite a few minor risks, stretching your ears can be a very rewarding experience.  Just do it for yourself, not because anyone pressures you into it.

Hopefully this will help some people out on this topic.

I went from regular peircings to 6 g in 2 days, i just shuved em in, im not that tuff when it comes to pain, and i could handle it no prob. I used the swirl ones so that one end was skinnier than the other so i just pushed them further whenever the pain would stop. I took them out for a few months, and then put another pair of 6s back in, and they pretty much slid right in, so it seems like for me it would take a while to shrink back to a regular starting hole. But i have heard of people taking weeks, so everyones different, i dont think i would go to a smaller gauge than 6 though, even though theyve got some awesome designs out there, i hate seeing people with huge gaping floppy earlobes, never mind the ouch factor.

First of all, you're never supposed to just "shove in" a larger earring. You should buy tapers and only gauge one size at a time.  Even if you taper 2 sizes at once, it's still much smarter than to just put in a new earring.  It will tear the hole and you'll be screwed until it heals.

my ears are at 1 inchs now and ive had them in for 2 years. if i take them out for 2 months then they will close to a zero at tops/

I had my ears pierced since I was 2 months.. the standard 18. When I turned about 14 yrs old I started putting navel piercings (14g earrings) so when I started to gauge  12 gauge slide in very easily. That was strange but it was because the navel rings were heavey so not only was i stretching them manually but they were stretching from the weight. The question should not be if they are going to hurt...it will but you will live. The question is if you want to take that step. Some peoples ears heal some don't. When i gauge I coat the earring in bacitracin or another anti-bacterial cream. It helps the earring slid in and, for me, it keeps my ears from tearing and getting infected. I haven't had a problem with them. I am at a 2 gauge. Problem my favorite pair of earrings are 4 gauge and they don't make them in larger sizes. So what I am gonna do it find flesh tunnel earrings and hang the earrings from them. It's gonna rock. Good luck.... I'm not done stretching so wish me luck also. LOL Most importantly have fun and pride in your new friends, or should i say what once was there.

I've got 1/2"s in and if i take them out for more then 5 minutes they start closeing up (i only moved up a few months ago so that might change) depending on how old you are it changes, the younger you are the more likely you can close em up. If your say 20 or older it'll be much harder, dont worry though use oil and rub em every night (you can buy oil just for gauged ears) and they will shrink up.

Dont ever gauge your ears right away or "just go for it" as some people said. I did this in my left ear and had a blowout that followed by a rather large keloid scar that looked like cancer. Its been a few years and the keloid is almost gone but still a bit visable, the effects of the blow out are still with me. I have a hard ball the size of an 8 gauge of what feels like cartilage almost in my left ear. I plan to redo both ears soon but there is no way in hell the material in my left ear lobe can be pierced so I have to get it derma punched to at least the size of an 8 get it out before I resume stretching.

The best to gauge your ears that I have found is to get in a hot shower, b/c that makes your skin easier to stretch and gradually pushed the gauge through.  Unless of course you have a lip on it.  That will just be a lil painfull and you'll just have to deal.

hey i was just wondering if anyone has had a problem with the steel tapers cuz i was thinking of gaging my ears but the tapers look sharp and it looks like when i would sleep or something it would stab me or fall out haha.  So i was just wondering if that was a problem for anyone or they shouldnt bother you at all

use vitamin e oil, it will lube the earring and make that easier, plus it helps break up the scar tissue making the next gauge go easier

i went from a regular 14 gauge to a 4 gauge in one day, its only been 2 months since then and I'm at 5/8's .. when i was at 7/16 my plug fell out one night and by the time i noticed it that morning they had already closed down to a 0... everyones body is different, since the 14 to a 4 jump i have been gauging a size a week, i seriously don't recommend that anyone does that, give it at least 2 weeks between any gauge size, you do real damage to your ears when you do it fast. if you take your time you cant regret it later, and you'll most likely be thankful you did it the long way.

I had a 8g and took it out for a week and it closed all the way up.  i had to almost rip it to get back in after that.  now i'mat a 2g in my bottom hole and a 8g in my second.  My ears rip pretty easy, so i'mnot sure if they will shrink. But i think that fast gaugeing is fine if you don't mind the pain.  just get a taper. they work great, if not a little painfully.

The standard piercing is closer to a twenty. The next size is, of course, an eighteen. Unless you want to tear the hell out of your piercings, you should go one step at a time and wait at least a couple of weeks between sizes. Don't just "[tough]it out" unless you want to deal with tearing. Spending the extra money on sizes and time will pay off in the end.

well it also depends on age, if you are younger you might heal faster. just take them out and they will most likely go back to the way they were but good luck

i went from a normal size (18g) to 10g. it was tough, and i bled a bit, but it was worth it. after that, i went to an 8g by just playing around with my 10g's. soon i went to a 6g, and i'mat a 4g right now. 4g's were tough for me to get in. just take your time and don't regret it. they go down in size! mine did, and then i stretched them back out!

I have a 4 gauge on both year right now and i'mthinking about going into 2 gauge, but I also want my ear to close up to 18 if i want it to close up.  I hear that 2 gauge is the point of no return but reading all the other comments people have close their lobes at 00gauge.  I played it safe with my ear going step by step with each gauge with about 4 months gap inbetween.  What do you guys think?

my ears are at 3/4g currently, to close your ears fast and easy get in salt water they will heal over the hole and heal easy and fast i surf and take my gauges out when i surf when i was around a 1/2 inch i took them out for 2 days and they closed to a 4g. so if you dont have salt water a pool should work fine, hopefully good luck everyone

I started off with a regular piercing, then went to a 14 by the next week, then a month later went to a 10...waited another month-ish and went to an 8 [which was practically NO difference to me]...and the night after i put the 8s in, i put in 6s and i love this size. i'dlike to go to at LEAST 4s...but i'mkinda chicken. hahaha. i suggest taking it slow, and make sure you take care of them. 14s arent that big of a deal to go to from a regular piercing. haha. go for it!

its not tape, its a taper.

its a piece of jewelry that starts of small like a 16, and at the other end its larger gage. kinda like a nail.

I did mine to an 8 in one go, it hurts but its quick and easy.

Im at 7/8, almost an inch. I had to take mine out because im going into the military, within a month they are at around 2 guage. The trick is the slight stretch plus smaller jewlery PLUS preperation H, yes the stuff for your ass, it helps it close up. Trust me, i seem to have to biggest guages in here, and if it worked for me, then it should work for others.

Depending on what kind of ears you have, no joke.
NEVER EVER try to be a badass and skip a size, one...chances are you'll blow out your ears creating scars. And scars are harder to stretch and they'll painful in the long run.
Patience is KEY to gauging ears.

Okay, regarding the whole 18g to 12g jump: it's not really a big deal.
I had had my ears pierced with an 18g when I was about one year old.

I bought crescent 12gs & just put them in. It hurts for a while & they stay sore for about two-three days but I didn't tear anything.

Hey... I started at an 18, and i went straight to a 10. Then to a 6, and then to a 2, which is where i'mat currently. I'm going no larger than a 0. My ears seem to have done fine so far, no bleeding or anything. And i'vedone all of them within about a month. My boyfriend went from an 18 to a 10 to a 6 in four days. His are ok also. I'm not worried about gauging them, i'mjust afraid they wont go back down when i dont want them anymore. I've heard that a 2 is the point of no return, and i'vealso heard a 00. Others say they'll always go back, no matter how big they are. If you have any info, please contact me... dark_tinkerbell13@hotmail.com

ok SO listen half these people have no clue what they are talking about. My ears are at 1 3/8 and my ear can close. If you go bigger then 1inch you can close. There are 2 ways of doing this u can 1  leave them out for ever. Or if u want them closed fast u can cut your lobes and they will try to heal themselves pr sandpaper works well. So there go as big as you want just DO IT.

your ears will go back from 5/8ths
okay i took out my 00 gauges for 2 days and they went down to a 0.
so just leave em out
don't put anything in the and you ll be fine...
so don't worry...it all depends on how much you stretched your ears from
like how many sizes you jumped...
the more you jumped to at the time the harder it is to go back,
but your only a zero and it'll be fine

This is an answer to those who are wondering how to fit bigger G's in.

I started out with an 18 gauge like most people, and got it from a gun at the mall. To move down to the next G, all i did was sit there and pull my earing downwards, thus slowly stretching it out and making the 14g easier to get in. I wouldn't stretch it right after u get it pierced though. wait until it is healed and doesn't RELE hurt to pull.

just buy a taper (training spike)starting from 3.5 to 5mm. Apply some unaesthetic cream and gently twist!making sure the o-ring at the back is nice and tight as this will aid the twisting process. Appox every 2 weeks go up a size (when the spike twists with ease). This way u can get up to o oo in the matter of a few months .it may be a little uncomfortable but it wont hurt!

they wont close after you hit 5/8 im at 3/4 and plan on going bigger, but my alternative is my family hates them and would pay for surgery to get them closed if i ever wanted it. but once yr ay 5/8 deppending on how youll heal or if you rip or have a blow out all depends. and "cow god" when you put tape on yr ear like you wrap it around the plug more and more each day but ive heards its quite uncomforatable and i guarrentee the money you spent on new tapers or plugs was worth the comfort level.

I think the healing process is different for every person.  I'm at a 2 gauge right now and if i take it out for a day im already having to push it back through because it was shrinking. But ive also heard of people taking it out for months and still not having it shrink.
It just depends.
