I have a vintage PC (compaq 286). Can I network it to a pentium1 PC? The pentium1 already has a PCI network card.

I was told that I need an ISA network card on the compaq 286 and a crossover cable.

Is this true?

Yes, it's possible.  You need an ISA Network card, and a crossover cable, plus a piece of software called a Network Client, usually Microsoft LAN Manager, and Microsoft LAN Client are the usual candidates for this task.

After that, all you need to do is install the client onto the PC, configure your settings, including the IP address, Workgroup, Domain (if you have one) and so fourth.

Using the LAN Clients above, you can type NET at the DOS Prompt to pop up a Text Mode GUI that allows you to connect to the Pentium 1 PC.
