Daniel,

You can't work with and H4 visa and If a not wrong you can't open a business either. To work you will need an H1B Visa but for that you first have to find an job offer form an employer that is willing to apply for you to and H1B visa.

Good luck

Marco

Dear Mr. Daniel
Currently INS is not issuing Social Security Number (SSN) to H4 visa holders. How did you get that?
A person on an H4 status is not allowed to work unless and until the person gets a Change of Status from the INS from H4 to H1B status. It is certainly possible to convert H4 to H1, if one can provide proof, that he / he is qualified, has had prior experience in his/her field of expertise, and have a job offer from a company in the United States.
Thanks,
Slick

Are you sure it's an SSN? -Could it be an ITIN for you to be included on your spouse's (H1) tax statement?

H4 = Entitled to an ITIN
H1 = Entitled to an SSN

Anyone with a valid visa can apply for an ITIN, but you need a work visa for an SNN.

You can not work as a H4.  It means that you can not be hired.  However, you can own and start your own business as long as you will not get any income. That's silly but you can be a shareholder for a c-corporation or LLC.  It means that you can get some benefit or money as a shareholder.

Instead of SSN, you can get tax id #.

the person could have received a SS # when he/she was young (maybe parents were in college or work in the US in the 80s or 70s) at that time a family could get SS # with the NOT VALID TO WORK stamp on it.
