I would like to hear from Dane owners that do not have fenced in yards.  I've been wanting a Dane for over 15 years and have researched the breed, can afford the dog, and now make the commitment.  I have a single family home but do not want to fence.  I understand the Danes prefer to be around people thus would not expect the Dane to want to stay in a fenced in area unattended to begin with.  In addition, I understand and have been told that Danes and make great apartment pets, thus those owners do not have a fenced in area for the Dane.  I plan on walking the Dane on a leash and being with the Dane when it is outside at all times.  In addition I plan for walking/hiking excursions and free runs in dog parks and on friends farms.  I have volunteered with the mid-atlantic great dane rescue league this past year to better understand the breed, but I'm having trouble adopting a Dane because I don't have a fenced in yard.  I'd like to hear from Dane owners that don't have fenced in yards.  Were you able to purchase a dog from a breeder without fencing?  I would rather adopt a homeless dog, but will make the commitment to raising a puppy if I have to.

I  use to do alot of dachshund rescue work and I too would require a fence most of the time. What you're saying sounds wonderful but can you honestly say that for the next 7-10 years, several times a day you will accompany the dog out EVERY SINGLE TIME? There will come a time that you feel he'll be alright fot just minute. Even if you are with him at all times, there's no guarantee he may one day see something and just take off. Hopefully not in front of a car. Happens all the time. If money is no problem why not just go ahead and get the darn fence?!

Hey.. I just got a Great Dane puppy.. I live in a 1 bedroom apartment.. Danes make awful pets when kept outside... If you are taking the dog for a walk everyday there should be no issues with needing a yard to run in :)

You just need to walk your dog everyday.  Some communities have parks just for dogs. If not, just take him to elementary school playground, after school lets out.  Always remember to be prepared to clean up, should the dog releave himself.
