Just got a 10week old chi yesterday 01-12-04. she was dx with kennel cough and given 2 lasik shots and antibiotics within the last 10days. she is still coughing and seem to be very over-weight. I am unsure if one has anything to do with the other? any suggestions?

When you say overweight, do you mean fat or chubby.  Baby chihuahuas often look like little butterballs, at 10 weeks that's normal, just as it is for human infants to have baby fat.  As they grow, they 'lean out'.

I would be concerned that she is still coughing, if she is carrying excess weight it can make her out of breath just as it does people who weigh too much.

I want to congratulate you not only on becoming the owner of a chihuahua, but in demonstrating your care and concern for her by entering this question on the board.

I suggest your first task should be to take puppy to the veterinarian for a thorough checkup, and to get her started on her vaccinations.  Try to find a vet who is familiar with toy breeds, they have their own challenges separate from those of larger dogs.

Your second task should be to invest in the book Chihuahuas for Dummies.  It is by far the best book I have on the care and maintenance of these adorable little creatures.

Good luck and please update this, it helps me become better at answering questions.
