What is the correct way to position a 3 prong 120v outlet? The ground pin down or up?

although there is really no correct answer, you could check your local electric codes. However, lately with the new GFI receptacles, the manufacturer recommends ground up.So, the theory is if water runs into receptacle then the ground plug will be contacted first tripping the receptacle.

the ground hole down and it isn't recommened that on gfci's the ground plug go up incase water runs in it that it will cause it to trip a gfci is designed to trip due to a short circuit regardless if water gets in the ground hole or not. know what you  are talking about before you give advice

What if it is in a basement and it get flooded; wouldn't you want the ground on the bottom?
