I have recently purchased an 8 week old Lhasa Apso without papers; however, I was assured by both the owner and a vet that she was a full breed. My question is that she is now 11 weeks old and she has all characteristics of an Lhasa Apso but she has short hair.  Has anyone ever heard of a short-haired Lhasa Apso or does anyone know if her hair will grow as she gets older.  Thank you for any advice that you can provide.

Our Lhasa's hair grows rather slowly.  We take him to the groomer every eight weeks and we keep him short to moderate depending on the weather.  A Lhasa's hair needs daily grooming if kept long as mats occur quickly and they are difficult to detect.

Yes! There are short haired! I have had 2 one just passed away he was 16yrs and my new one
just turned a year. Both were full breed but
both were short haired. I checked into it with my vet cause mine looked like it had poodle in him. Both had curly hair.Yes it
does matt worse than the long haired.I was grooming my 1 yr and it was matting as I was brushing him.I wouldn't worry about it I think the short hair ones are cuter!!!!

It's hard to say without know exactly how short the puppy's hair is. At 11 weeks, my girl Lhasa's hair was about an inch long and my boy was about 1.5 inches. They are now 9 mo. and 5 mo. and their hair is about 5 inches and 3 inches, respectively. So, I think that if your Lhasa's hair is about a  half inch to one inch, then that's probably  normal.

How fast do you think that a dog's hair can grow.  Of course your Lhasa Apso has a short coat, it is only eight weeks old.  How fast does your hair grow in eight weeks.  Wait a little bit and then start worrying about not having a Lhasa Apso.

Dear Michelle,
I brought my Lhasa home at 7 weeks of age.  She had somewhat short hair but she and her hair grew as the months went on.  The texture of their hair changes too as they grow up.

She is now 2 1/2 years old and her hair grows like wildfire.  I brush her everyday but since she loves to play with other dogs and roll around in the dirt I find it easier to keep her in a puppy cut.

Enjoy your new baby.

I recently had a Lhasa Apso pass away back in July (she got hit by a hit n run car) and she was a short haired dog. I would have to groom her every 2-3months to keep her "clean". She had a very fluffy tail(hence why i called her Fluffy) and a beard, thats mainly the part that was rather long!

Yes there are short haired lhasa apso's  They are called propso.  I do not know how they came about but they do exist.  I have a female and her hair does not get any longer than one inch.  They are great for people who love the lhasa attitude but do not want all the hair that goes with it.

My husband and I have a 7month old lhasa and his hair isn't growing either.  We saw the mom and dad...they looked like lhasas.  We are waiting on AKC papers from the breeder, however, our groomer seems to think that he really resembles a tibetan spaniel.  I do too.  Maybe his hair will grow...he's still cute and it's a lot less trouble.
