all fish need aquarium salt.  some people say balas are prone to ich.  ive never had a problem.. but nevertheless, salt provides electrolytes and helps with slime coating and disease prevention.  good question.

I have 7 bala sharks, pretty big.  i'vebeen using doc wellfish freshwater salt with no problems ever since the ick outbreak....seems to work great.  i have glass catfish, cories, hatchetfish and they were all with the balas no problem.  i separated them cause i think my burmese suncat ate all the neons, he had an unusual growth spurt and he was hungry i guess.
