What Is It? A Typhoon is a tropical storm with winds that have reached a constant speed of 74 miles per hour. The eye of a Typhoon is usually 20-30 miles wide and may extend over 400 miles. Where Do They Occur? Typhoons occur in the Western Pacific or China Sea. Typhoons are called Hurricanes in the Atlantic, and Cyclones in most of the Pacific. They all occur over oceans in regions near the equator. Safety If a Typhoon is coming tape your windows so they don't shatter. Tie items down in your yard so they don't fly away, and most importantly do not panic. What Causes It? When warm air collides with cold air they spin in a counter clockwise direction until the winds get stronger forming a Typhoon. What Happens? The eye has light winds, clear skies and no rainfall. Why Do Hurricanes Form and Where Are They Found? Hurricanes form and intensify over oceanic regions. They require sea-surface temperatures of at least 26�C (80�F) and the influence of the earth�s rotation to initiate a spinning circulation (Coriolis effect). The adjacent map shows the places on earth where these conditions are met for hurricane formation. Hurricanes generally form at the tail of the arrow and typically track following the arrow to its arrowhead. In North America, we call a storm that results from these conditions a hurricane. In other parts of the world, a hurricane is known by other names, including "typhoon" in the Western North Pacific and "tropical cyclone" in the Indian Ocean and the Western South Pacific. Hurricanes produce damaging surface winds and storm surges. While high winds cause significant structural and environmental damage, storm surges are frequently the most devastating element of a hurricane. Coastal and low-lying escape routes flood 2-4 hours before arrival of center. Small craft in unprotected anchorages break moorings." Category 3: Extensive Damage "Some structural damage to small residences and utility buildings with a minor amount of curtainwall failures. Mobile homes are destroyed. Flooding near the coast destroys smaller structures with larger structures damaged by floating debris. Terrain continuously lower than 5 feet ASL may be flooded inland 8 miles or more." Category 4: Extreme Damage "More extensive curtainwall failures with some complete roof structure failure on small residences. Major erosion of beach. Major damage to lower floors of structures near the shore. Terrain continuously lower than 10 feet ASL may be flooded requiring massive evacuation of residential areas inland as far as 6 miles." Category 5: Catastrophic Damage "Complete roof failure on many residences and industrial buildings. Some complete building failures with small utility buildings blown over or away. Major damage to lower floors of all structures located less than 15 feet ASL and within 500 yards of the shoreline. Massive evacuation of residential areas on low ground within 5 to 10 miles of the shoreline may be required."

Typhoons A typhoon approaching Japan, as seen from the Himawari weather satellite. (Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan Weather Association) A lot of typhoons strike Japan between June and October. August and September are particularly prone to these tropical storms. Typhoons develop in the tropical waters north of the equator in the Western Pacific and are defined as tropical storms with gusts of at least 17.2 meters per second (62 kph). Similar storms are called by different names, depending on where they develop. In the Indian Ocean, they are known as cyclones, while in the Atlantic, they're called hurricanes. Hurricanes and cyclones, though, are storms with gusts of at least 32.7 meters per second (118 kph). In the United States, hurricanes are given boys' and girls' names, but in Japan the Meteorological Agency gives typhoons numbers according to the order that they develop, and this is how they are referred to in weather forecasts. Japanese meteorologists classify the typhoons into five levels of size and intensity. TV weather forecasters, therefore, may refer to an approaching storm as "Typhoon No. 8 of large scale and average intensity." An average of 27.8 typhoons form each year, of which 2.8 pass across Japanese land. As they approach Japan, typhoons tend to lose their strength because the waters around the country are cooler than in the tropics. By the time they get close to Hokkaido, most typhoons turn into tropical storms. Typhoons can be powerful enough to decimate large areas - not just in Japan but also in the Philippines and other parts of Southeast and East Asia. There have been a number of large, destructive typhoons in Japanese history; among the biggest was the typhoon that struck Ise Bay in September 1959, claiming 5,000 lives and destroying or damaging 800,000 homes. There hasn't been that much damage in recent years because of improved forecasting techniques, better ways to prevent and escape from disasters, and wider availability of information through the media. The severest typhoon in the past 10 years took the lives of 19 people in September 1991.
