in answer to the question "why do computers need an operating systems" the answer is as follows.
computer consist of hardware and software. the hardware is the group name for the components within the computer system. the software is the applications running on the computer. the hardware works in binary but not as be see it on screen. binary consists of 0's and 1's which represents the open and the closed gates within the motherboard. as humans cannot read binary and understand it, the operating system is created to show to the user what is happening in a way that they can understand. so in theory, an operating system is what a computer needs to allow the user to communicate with the hardware through a GUI.
