From 1912-1917 there were a series of mini-movies called the Keystone cops- they ran weekly.  But way before Godfather II- there was Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein (1935)- Googlize people!!

What constitutes a sequel?  Does the second film have to be a continuation of the first movie's story line?  Does the second have to have some of the same characters as the first (most importantly, the lead character, and do the characters have to be played by the same star?)?  I submit "Beneath the Planet of the Apes" (1970).  Please respond.

Although all those other movies were part of a series, I think as far as a sequel with the title "________ II" it might be The Godfather II.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I'd love to know the answer on this one.

Dudes, your all wet.  Bride of Frankenstein was 1935 (to Frankenstein 1931), but Son of Kong was 1933 (King Kong was also released in 1933).   The Keystone Cops were more Movie Shorts then movies, like Laurel and Hardy and the Stooges clips.  I'll bet there is a full length sequel predating Kong though.

It's actually 'Fall of a Nation' (from 1916). It's the sequel to a movie called 'Birth of a Nation' (from 1915).

Sorry Tinkerbell, but Bride of Frankenstein in 1935 was not the first movie sequel ever made. The first movie sequel ever made was 1916's "Fall of a Nation", a follow up to D.W. Griffith's wildly successful 1915 feature "Birth of a Nation."
