I have a Chihuahua that had been abandoned.  She is tan, weighs 2 lbs.   She has been spayed and is approx 1 year old.   My question, and my concern, is that the fontanel (soft spot)  has not closed.  She is totally healthy otherwise.  She does have a malformed lower jaw, but is able to eat and do anything else she wants.  If anyone has and answer or can give me advice on this I would greatly appreciate it.   thanks

Don't worry about the fontanel.  In chihuahuas they sometimes don't always close all the way.  It used to be a sign that they are pure-bred, but pure-breds can have either open or closed, another name for the soft-spot is molera.

As long as your vet has determined that she doesn't need surgery to correct her jaw, than don't worry about it.  I would recommend that you brush her teeth at least weekly if not several times a week.  I use a baby toothbrush and either baby toothpaste (non-foaming and safe to swallow) or meat flavored which can be purchased at Petco, Petsmart, etc.  And, if she can crunch her kibbles, give her other crunchy things to chew too, which will strengthen her jaw muscles and make maximum use of what she has.
