Try the dirty t-shirt routine.

Wear an old piece of clothing you can through away.  When you put him in his crate put it in with him.  I have done this with all of my puppies and it has worked every time.  Change the article of clothing every day or so and in know time he should be fine without it and sleep just find for you.

My husband and I work long hours so even though we decided against "crate training" we used an under-the-bed 3ft x 2ft storage container (cover removed) and lined it with "pee pads" which you can find just about anywhere. (Walmart) Once she was used to the pads, we replaced them with newspaper. Our dog has learned to "go" in the papered pan while we are away during the day or night, and still goes outside as well, but she has also learned to hold her bladder at night because she sleeps on the end of our bed at night (we keep the door closed). I don't like crate training. We tried that with another dog. Unfortunately, they whine all night until they get over it. You should practice putting the dog in the crate while you're there and awake too. Do it in several small intervals...maybe 2-3 hours at a time. Eventually she will learn that you will not give in to her whining and she will settle down. The advantage to doing it this way is that no one is usually bothered from sleeping, and you can control the amount of time she is in the crate so she is not whining for hours upon hours. Whatever works for you. You don't have to crate train. If you want you can even use pee pads on the floor until she is used to doing it on the pads, and then move the pads outside.

Natalia,

Did you have problems getting the puppy trained to go in the covered pan? My husband and I also work long hours but really want a shih tzu puppy.

How long did it take to get the dog housebroken?

Every time your Shih Tzu starts crying...you should probably try to take your dog to go outside and do it's buisness. My Shih Tzu complains and wines alot because it needs to go pee or poo...or it can't sleep, or it is just hungry. You should make an exact time to let your dog poo or pee in the night...my time would be 10 pm or 11 pm.

If you have a shih tzu.And you want to house break it. I would do this. What you do is . Take a pee pad (at walmart, kmart, petco etc.)And put the pee pad in a litter box.But do not buy litter for the litter box.Because Shih tzus tend to eat it.Also if it dosn'tpee on the pee pad soak the pee pad in your shih tzus pee. Then they will pee in there. This also works for other dogs.

My shih tzu, Baby, cried a lot at night to. We asked the vet what to do and he told us to let him sleep with us. Dogs are pack animals you are now their pack. When in the wilderness dogs, sleep together, for protection and warmth etc. This is just instinct for them to want to be with you when sleeping. And they associate the bed as their "den" so they don't go to the bathroom on it, so it becomes like the crate in that since. So let him sleep with you!! It will make everybody's night a lot easier.

My wife and I have a 12 week old shih tzu we are potty training. Crate, treats, time chart and outside. When we take her out of the crate we leash her take her out, give her a treat and praise her when she's done. Then we follow her back in the house and let her play for a hour or so. Then back in the crate. She is doing well except she don't let us know when. How do we get her to let us know when it's time go?

Maybe your dog just doesn't wanna be left alone. Before, we used to leave the dog in the dining room, inside his crate. Because it kept barking, I placed the crate inside my bedroom and if he starts barking again, I say in a firm voice, "I'm here." It went on for two days and afterwards, my shih tzu puppy has managed to sleep all by himself. He's 2 months and 2 weeks old now.

WE TAKE HER OUT ALL THE TIME.SHE GOES PEE OUTSIDE EVERYTIME WE TAKE HER OUT. I HAVE A PET TRAINER AND SHE IS GIVING US SOME HINTS ON WHAT TO TRY.LIKE WHEN YOU CATCH HER IN THE ACT SAT NO OR HAY AND TAKE HER OUT IMEDIATELY.OR WHEN SHE IS GOIN OUTSIDE OR WHERE YOU WANT HER TO GO GIVE HER A TREAT AND PRAISE HER WITH GOOD GIRL IN A NICE VOICE AND LOVE HER.LETTING HER KNOW THAT SHE WAS DOING SOMETHING GOOD.ALSO SINCE THEY ARE STILL A PUPPY AND SO YOUNG IT IS HARD FOR THEM TO CONTROL THEIR BLADDER SO IT SHOULD GET BETTER AS SHE GETS OLDER.GOOD LUCK JOANNE

My husband and I have a 7-mth old Shih Tzu. The best thing about this breed is their intelligence. Our puppy, Gizmo, was potty trained in a couple of weeks, although he does have occasional accidents. The one thing we do (as a constant) is, we take him out in the morning before we go to work and immediately upon coming home from work. (We don't play or cuddle with him until he's gone to the bathroom. Of course, we pat him on the head and say hello to him...) Positive reinforcement for positive behavior (classical conditioning technique). However, if he does have an accident...We do not punish, we just get his attention (to stop him in the process) and take him outside, so he can finish... Then we tell him "good boy".

The hardest thing we have to deal with is bedtime behavior. Gizmo does not see the crate as punishment b/c we give him treats to go inside of it (we have him crate trained). But, he's finicky. Sometimes he will sleep in his crate all night long; other times he will not (cry and bark). The problem is that we live in an apartment, so it's hard to let him bark until he gets to sleep.

So, something we found that works for this behavior is, we let him sleep with us as a treat. Which works, b/c when we do put him in the crate he sleeps all night long (until he has to use the bathroom in the morning)... I'm assuming that he has associated sleeping through the night (in the crate) with getting to sleep with us. So, it works.

Overall, he's a great dog. The only thing I can suggest is stay constant with the punishment and the behavior. Do not punish him/her for everything. Also, if you are in a relationship with someone, make a pact. Do not punish/reward for behavior and then let your partner counteract that. (In other words, do not punish but then allow your partner to reward him/her for the negative behavior.) It will only confuse your dog.

I do not believe in using potty pads and training your dog to use the bathroom outside. It doesn't reassure your dog to do one or the other. I believe that, if you are going to train your pup to use the bathroom outside, do that. If you want to train your dog to use the potty pads, do that, but do not do both. That can confuse the pup also. However, there are many approaches to training, so do not take my words at face value. Study the different approaches and pick what is best for you and your puppy.

Take care!

Jenn
