Hey,

You should install an Antivirus program on your computer, like Symantec Norton Antivirus or McAfee. Search on the web with the words "antivirus program download" and you will find a lot of free antivirus programs.
Symantec Norton will check your incoming and outgoing e-mail, will be able to check your full hard disk, and if you say it can, it will scan your hard disk root (very important) at each startup.

So the short answer is: install an antivirus program.

Another way to avoid most of the latest viruses is to use a different Operating System.  99% of the viruses today are written for the Windows operating system or their associated Microsoft Applications.  If you were to move to Macintosh, or better yet, to Linux, you'd eliminate much of the risk associated with these viruses...

Get a good anti-virus program. Be very careful about what you download. Familiarize
yourself with the suggested caveats. I didn't and wound up with thirteen adwares.
Took me hours to get them out of files.
I am leery of anything that needs to be downloaded.
