the last letter of the file extension, the rest is exacly the same.
Files with the extension .pps will be directly displayed as a slideshow, rather than opening it in editing mode.

There is no difference in content, the only difference is the way PowerPoint treats these files. A .ppt is opened in Edit mode, a .pps is played when opened.

A .ppt is the editable file. This one will open in PowerPoint, which then you can edit or make changes to the existing PowerPoint. A .pps Stands for a PowerPointShow. This is an executable file, in which if you double click on it, it will automatically start the PowerPoint. Without changing this extension, you will not be able to edit the existing PowerPoint.
