Stretch.  Doesn't matter how, if it hurts you're doing the right thing.  Do it while you're watching TV, reading, whatever; just make yourself uncomfortable ;)

Heat will loosen your tendons and let you stretch more.  Don't over-do it.  A great way to get hurt is to think you can push yourself into becoming truely flexible in a month.

You shouldn't strech yourself to the point of pain, b/c you will end up hurting yourself internally by ruining your muscles and stuff. But anyway just stretch constantly or even create a stretching routine.. don't worry you'll be flexible SOON!

and trig you said that you stretch and it doesn't matter if it hurts, i think you mean that you have to stretch until you feel a slight pain but in a good way you don't want to keep stretching if your in intense pain. if your in intense pain then that means your over doing it. try to let off a bit.

ive been training to be a performer for the past 5 years....to say if it hurts is good, is not good advice...infact the complete opposite. streching should NOT hurt, yes it feels uncomfortable and tight but not hurt. you should relax into a strech and follow certain rules such as knees should always face the ceiling if doing a strech in second and if sitting lift up from the waist, out of the hips. dont strain and if you do pull a muscle do not massage or a apply heat as you will inflame the injured muscle. im sorry darling but you cannot strech to a time limit...you body has restrictions and not all of us are flexable. as long as you do the excercises correctly you should see results soon...hope that helps

Stretch whenever possible, do it in your stretching. The only way to get better at something is to keep doing it. There is no fast way to get flexible. I'd recommend starting you way up to back bends and when sitting and reaching for your toes, if you cant do it yet, bend you leg just until you can touch your foot then try to push your foot back out, the ultimate goal is to be able to kiss your knee. That would put you on a great start. Good luck!!

Your coach will get mad? Well, what part of your body  do you want to flex? You back - Just warm up yourself then start to do bridges down the wall, do not overdo it past the point of pain otherwise you'll get back problems later on. The splits - Some people are just more naturally flexible than others. I believe that ANYONE who really works at it can learn to do the splits. However, before you try to get into a split, be sure you have stretched your legs.

Try a pike stretch 1st; sit on the floor on a pike, legs straight, toes pointed, and try and get your nose as close to your knees as you can. Hold for 30 seconds. Next, flex your feet, keeping the nose as far down as possible. After you have done this, sit in a wide straddle, and attempt to get your elbows on the floor. Hold 30 seconds, then reach your hands as far out as possible, attempting to put your nose on the floor. Again, hold 30 seconds.

Next, place either leg in front, and lunge from your knee; your rear knee is on the floor, your front foot is far in front. Hold 30 seconds, then sit back, straighten the front leg, and try to place your nose on your knees. Then slide as far into the split as you are able. Repeat on the other side. Hold each position 30 seconds.

NEVER bounce while stretching or push yourself past the point of pain. Slow and steady does it.

Many people feel that the body is more flexible after a warm bath, so you may want to try these drills after a warm bath. I advise doing this 2 times daily, morning and evening. If you keep at it, you should see a lot of improvement in your flexibility.

But remmember do as much as you can, if you do it to much at once you could hurt one of you'r muscles!

Hope that helps, Good luck!

CJ,

Let me just say this: There is no way to become really flexible in only one month. Being limber takes time and that means being constant, (as Trig said,) but try not to be extreme. If you overdo, you could find yourself with injuries of sorts, and that will put you behind. If you are young though, you should be able to get a lot out of your body with not too much work. But it will never be over night. It will also depend on how you’re built, from my experience, such as flexibility in hips and such. It may take longer if you are tighter then most, as I was. But just keep on it and you’ll be as limber as a noodle in no time. Just remember:

Never stretch when you’re cold - (it helps to move some first and wear warm clothing)

Push yourself, but start out slow -

Always make sure to do your weak side first -

As much as we like to practice what we do well, what we’re having a harder time with must be given the most attention -

Hope that helped, and best of luck on point!

aWizardsDream

Just stretch!  Stretch whenever you can!  Jog in place for a minute or two to warm up your muscles so you don't get hurt.  You want to stretch until you feel it hurt, then hold it for about 20 seconds.

Hope it helps!

Stretch. 15 minutes a day. Don't think that this is going to happen over a month, it will take longer than that (depending on how limber you are now). Be careful. If you tear your tendon's, to be frank, you're screwed.

to be flexiable u should first believe in yourself that you CAN do the splits (for example) I had to same problem and all I did was ask my dance teacher. she told me that the best thing to do is to is to stretch through out the day and for long periods of time. so like instead of a 10 second butterfly make it 1-10 minutes depending on how bad you want it.

What i think that you should do is for 15 minutes do jumping jacks and then do 10 push ups and that will make u warm then get a freind and while for example if u are doing a split make the other freind spread ur legs even more but dont over due it and always exhale while u are strecthing through the mouth.

Stretch morning, afternoon and evening every day.  One stretch that is difficult but in time will help is trying to do the split and balancing yourself while going down.  Time yourself and try it for 30 seconds and keep increasing every time.  The muscle will relax slowly and stretch in time.

I can't do the splits, and I'm also wanting to get signed up for gymnastics, but my parents can't afford it. I need to know how to be flexible and I also need some info on how to teach yourself gymnastics (Back-walkovers, Flips of all kinds,)

I do Jazz, Cross Country, and i just started gymnastics. all of these things require you to be mucho flexible, something u and i both are not. Uhm, when i stretch (which is the best was to become flexible) i try to hold my splits for as long as i can, i cant do a whole split, or even a half of a split? but i practice and get better. The time stretching hurts most is in the morning, but its also the most benificial. try to start out slow and work your way up. trust me, your ballet and pointe teachers will understand if you are truly trying to become flexible.

Best of luck!!

Hey I do dancing, not ballet but it requires the same flexibility as ballet and simple gymnastics. What is do is yeah when I watch TV I willjust sit in my splits or lie down an stretch my back.. it really helps. Just remember WARM UP! a friend of mine tore her hamstring going into splits without warming up. she was on crutches for weeks.

Trig is right. It's all about repetition. Do it over and over again. It is good if it hurts and it will be worth it in the end. Work on everything not just splits. And don't worry if it doesnt't happen over night because it wont. Good Luck!

just keep stretching, a good way to stretch is to use the barre at your dancing class and simply put your leg up on it, making sure it is straight and lean over, you can do this stretch with your leg at the front, side or back.

or you could try to do the splits and exhale and you will be suprized at how much lower you get just be exhaling.

Well you will have to stretch every day. I do the same thing... I do ballet and everyday i stretch. It will be hard the first few days but after that it will be easy making you go farther. You should lay on your back by a wall and put your legs on the wall into a straddle position. The gravity will pull your legs down. Just stay there for a while. It WILL work. Good Luck!!
